本発明は、 新規液晶性化合物および液晶組成物及びこの液晶組成物を用いて構 成した液晶表示素子に関し、 更に詳しくは、 フッ素置換された 1 , 4一フ ニレ ン基を有する液晶性化合物、 これを含有する液晶組成物及びこの液晶組成物を用 いて構成した液晶表示素子に関する。
背景技術
液晶性化合物 (本願において、 液晶性化合物なる用語は、 液晶相を示す化合物 および液晶相を示さないが液晶組成物の構成成分として有用である化合物の総称 として用いる。 ) を用いた表示素子は、 時計、 電卓、 ワープロ等のディスプレイ に広く利用されている。 近年では、 高コントラスト、 広視野角等の特性を有す る TFT型ディスプレイの研究が盛んに行われている。
TFT用の液晶組成物には、 高い電圧保持率および低いしきい値電圧 (V t h) を有し、 それらの温度変化が小さく、 広い液晶相温度範囲を有し、 他の液晶 材料との相溶性に優れ、 低粘性であること等の物性が求められている。 また、 応 答速度の向上のために、 大きな Δηを有する組成物も有用である。

本願の化合物の一部は、 前記 ( 6) 〜 ( 1 1 ) 等に開示された一般式に形式的 に包含されている。 し力、し、 前記のいずれの明細書中にも、 本発明の化合物に相 当する部分については物性値等のデータが一切無く、 その特性について具体的に 言及されておらず、 これらの文献は本願発明を示唆するものではなかった。 発明の開示
本発明の目的は、 TFT用の液晶組成物に関する前記の要求特性に鑑み、 極め て高い電圧保持率を有し、 その温度変化が極めて小さく、 低いしきい値電圧およ び大きな Δ nを有する液晶性化合物、 これを含有する液晶組成物およびこの液晶 組成物を用いて構成した液晶表示素子を提供することにある。
本発明者たちは上記の課題の解決のため鋭意研究の結果、 一般式 ( 1 )

一般式 (1) で表される化合物は次の通り類別される。
以下の式 (1 a) 〜 (1 h) において、 Rおよび Xは前記と同様の意味を示し、 Za〜Zcは互に独立して— (CH2) 2—、 一 (CH2) 4一、 一 CH2〇—、 - 〇CH2—、 一 (CH2) 3〇一または— 0 (CH2) 3—を示し、 Pは任意の 1〜 2個の水素原子がフッ素原子で置換されていてもよい 1 , 4一フエ二レン基を示 す。

これらの化合物のうち、 式 ( 1 a) 〜 ( 1 d) で表される化合物が本発明の目 的を達成する上で特に好ましい。
これらの式中、 Rは炭素数 1〜20の直鎖もしくは分岐したアルキル基である が、 具体的には、 直鎖アルキル基としてメチル、 ェチル、 プロピル、 プチル、 ぺ ンチル、 へキシル、 ヘプチル、 デシル、 ペン夕デシル、 ィコシル等を、 また分岐 アルキル基としてイソプロピル、 s e c—ブチル、 t e r t—ブチル、 2—メチ ループチル、 イソペンチル、 イソへキシル、 3—ェチルォクチル、 3, 8—ジメ チルテトラデシル、 5—ェチル一 5—メチルノナデシル等を示すことができる。 これらのアルキル基は、 酸素原子が連続しない限り、 基中の任意のメチレン基 (一 CH2—) が酸素 (― 0—) で置換されてもよい。 メチレン基が酸素で置換 されたアルキル基の例としてアルコキシ基およびアルコキシアルキル基等を示す ことができる。
これらをより具体的に例示するならば、 メ トキシ、 エトキン、 プロボキシ、 ブ 卜キシ、 ペンチルォキシおよびノニルォキシ等のアルコキシ基、 メ トキシメチル、 メ トキシェチル、 メ トキシプロピル、 メ トキシブチル、 メ トキシペンチル、 メ ト
キシォクチル、 エトキシメチル、 エトキシェチル、 エトキンプロピル、 エトキン へキンル、 プロボキシメチル、 プロボキシェチル、 プロボキシプロピル、 プロボ キシペンチル、 ブトキシメチル、 ブトキシェチル、 ブトキシブチル、 ペンチルォ キシメチル、 ペンチルォキシブチル、 へキンルォキシメチル、 へキシルォキシェ チル、 へキシルォキシプロピル、 ヘプチルォキシメチルおよぴォクチルォキシメ チル等のアルコキシアルキル基等を示すことができる。
Xはハロゲン原子または炭素数 1〜2 0のアルキル基である。 このアルキル基 は酸素原子が連続しない限り、 基中の任意のメチレン基 (- CH2—) が酸素 (― 0—) で置換されてもよく、 また基中の水素原子はフッ素原子で置換されて いてもよい。 具体的には、 前記のアルキル基、 アルコキシ基、 アルコキシアルキ ル基を例示でき、

前記 Rおよび または Xが光学活性基である化合物は、 キラルド一プ剤として 特に有用である。
—般式 ( 1 ) において、 Z" Z2および Z3は相互に独立して— (CH2) 2—、 一 (CH2) 4一、 一 CH2〇一、 一 OCH2—、 一 (CH2) 30—、 — 0 (CH2 ) 3—または単結合を示すが、 好ましくは一 (CH2) 2—、 一 (CH2) 4—、 一 CH20—、 一〇CH2—または単結合であり、 より好ましくは— (CH2) 2—ま たは単結合である。
本発明の化合物は比較的高い等方相転移温度を示す。
本発明の化合物は、 Xがハロゲン原子または CF 3等の強極性基である場合、 極めて大きな正の Δ εおよび低いしきい値電圧を有し、 該基がアルキル基または アルコキシ基等の弱い極性基である場合、 比較的低い粘性を示す。
また、 本発明の化合物のいくつかは△ εが負の値を示すが、 これらの化合物は、 インプレーンスイッチング ( I PS) 方式ゃヴアーティカルアラインメント (V Α) 方式用の液晶組成物の構成成分として好適である。
さらに、 一般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物を構成する原子は、 その同位体で置換 されていても同等の特性を示すことから好ましいものといえる。
これらの置換基および結合基を適宣選択することにより所望の物性を有する化 合物を得ることができる
本発明の一般式 ( 1 ) で示される液晶性化合物は、 一般的な有機合成法によつ て製造することができるが、 例えば以下のような方法で簡便に製造することがで さる。

すなわち、 s c h em e 1に示したごとく、 トルエンあるいはキシレン等とェ 夕ノール等のアルコール類および水の混合溶媒中 K2C〇3あるいは Na 2C03等 の塩基および炭素担持パラジウム (P d— C) 、 P d (P Ph3) 4、 P d C 12 (PPh3) 2等の触媒存在下、 化合物 (4) と化合物 (5) とを反応させること により本発明の化合物 ( 1 ) を製造することができる。

s c h erne 7に示すごとく、 化合物 ( 1 3) を水素化ほう素ナトリウム (S BH) 、 水素化リチウムアルミニウム、 水素化ジイソブチルアルミニウムまたは 水素化ビス (2—メ トキシェトキシ) アルミニウムナトリウム等の還元剤により 還元して化合物 ( 1 5) とし、 これを DAST等のフッ素化剤と反応させモノフ ルォロメチル化合物 ( 1 6) を製造することができる。
s c h eme 8に示すごとく、 化合物 ( 1 7) をアルバート等の方法 (シンセ ティック コミュニケイシヨンズ, 1 9, 5 4 7 ( 1 9 8 9 ) ) により化合物 ( 1 8) とする。 これを黒星等の方法 (テトラへドロン レ夕一ズ, 3 3, 29, 4 1 7 3 ( 1 9 9 2 ) ) でフッ素化して、 トリフルォロメ トキシ化合物 ( 1 9) を製造することができる。
また、 s c h eme 9に示すごとく、 化合物 ( 1 7) をクロロジフルォロメ夕 ン Z水酸化ナトリウム (特表平 3— 5 0 0 4 1 3 ) の系中でフッ素化して、 ジフ ルォロメ トキシ化合物 (2 0) を製造することができる。 あるいは C h e n等の 方法 (ザ ジャーナル ォブ フルオリン ケミストリ一, 4 4, 4 3 3 ( 1 9 8 9) ) によっても製造することができる。
原料であるハロゲン化合物およぴジヒドロキシボラン誘導体も一般的な有機合 成法によって製造することができるが、 例えば以下のような方法で簡便に製造す ることができる。

(式中、 R、 Y,〜Y4および X aは前記と同様の意味を示す。 ) すなわち、 s c h em e 1 0に示すごとく化合物 (2 1 ) と n— Bu L i等の リチウム化合物およびヨウ素または臭素等とを反応させることによってハロゲン 化合物 (22) を製造することができる。
また、 s c h eme 1 1に示すごとく化合物 (22) とマグネシウムから調製 したグリニャール試薬とトリメ トキシボランまたはトリイソプロピルォキシボラ ン等のボラン誘導体類とを反応させた後、 塩酸等で加水分解することによってジ ヒドロキシボラン誘導体 (23) を製造することができる。
上述の反応を、 化合物の性質により任意に組み合わせることにより目的とする 本発明化合物を製造することができる。
また、 例示した反応は全て公知のものであり、 必要によりさらに他の公知反応 を使用できることは言うまでもない。
このようにして得られる本発明の液晶性化合物は、 極めて高い電圧保持率を有 し、 その温度変化が極めて小さく、 低いしきい値電圧および大きな Δηを有する c また、 これらの本発明液晶性化合物は、 液晶表示素子が通常使用される条件下 において物理的および化学的に十分安定であり、 ネマチック液晶組成物の構成成 分として極めて優れている。
本発明の化合物は、 TN、 STN、 TFTおよびその他の表示方式用の液晶組 成物においても、 その構成成分として好適に使用することができる。
以下、 本発明の液晶組成物に関して説明する。
本発明に係る液晶組成物は、 一般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物の少なく とも 1種類 を 0. 1〜9 9. 9重量%の割合で含有することが、 優良な特性を発現せしめる ために好ましく、 より好ましくはその割合は 1〜 6 0重量%である。
更に詳しくは、 本発明で提供される液晶組成物は、 一般式 ( 1 ) の化合物を少 なく とも 1種類含有する第一成分に加え、 液晶組成物の目的に応じて一般式 (
2) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物群から選択される化合物を混合することにより完 する。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 ( 2) 〜 (4) で表される化合物とし て、 好ましくは以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (2) 〜 (4) で表される化合物は誘電率異方性値が正の化合物であり、 熱的安定性や化学的安定性が非常に優れており、 特に電圧保持率の高い、 あるい は比抵抗値の大きいといつた高信頼性が要求される T F T用の液晶組成物を調製 する場合には、 不可欠な化合物である。
一般式 (2) 〜 (4) で表される化合物の使用量は、 TFT用の液晶組成物を 調製する場合、 液晶組成物の全重量に対して 0. 1〜9 9. 9重量%の範囲で使 用できる力、 好ましくは 1 0〜9 7重量%、 より好ましくは 4 0〜 9 5重量%で ある。 また、 一般式 (7) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物を、 拈度調整の目的で更に 含有してもよい。 S T N表示方式または T N表示方式用の液晶組成物を調製する 場合も一般式 (2) 〜 (4) で表される化合物を使用することができる。 その場 合は 5 0重量%以下の使用量が好ましい。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 (5) および ( 6) で表される化合物 として、 好ましくは以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

—般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物は誘電率異方性値が正でその値が 大きく、 特に液晶組成物のしきい値電圧を小さくする目的で使用される。 また、 屈折率異方性値の調整、 透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広げる目的に も使用される。 さらに、 STNまたは ΤΝ用の液晶組成物の V— Τ曲線の急峻性 を改良する目的にも使用される。
—般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物は、 特に STNおよび ΤΝ用の液 晶組成物を調製する場合には有用な化合物である。
一般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物の使用量を増加させると、 液晶組 成物のしきい値電圧が小さくなり、 粘度が上昇する。 したがって、 液晶組成物の 粘度が要求特性を満足する限り、 多量に使用した方が低電圧駆動できるので有利
である。 一般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物の使用量は、 STNまたは TN用の液晶組成物を調整する場合には 0. 1〜9 9. 9重量%の範囲で任意に 使用できるが、 好ましくは 1 0〜9 7重量%、 より好ましくは 4 0〜9 5重量% である。
本発明の液晶組成物で用いられる一般式 (7) ~ ( 9) で表される化合物とし て、 好ましくは以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (7) 〜 (9) で表される化合物は誘電率異方性の絶対値が小さく、 中 性に近い化合物である。 一般式 (7) で表される化合物は主として粘度調整また は屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 また、 一般式 ( 8) および ( 9) で表される化合物は透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広げる目的または 屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。
一般式 (7) 〜 (9) で表される化合物の使用量を増加させると液晶組成物の しきい値電圧が大きくなり、 粘度が小さくなる。 したがって、 液晶組成物のしき い値電圧の要求値を満足している限り、 多量に使用することが望ましい。 一般式 (7) 〜 (9) で表される化合物の使用量は、 TFT用の液晶組成物を調製する 場合には、 4 0重量%以下が好ましく、 より好ましくは 3 5重量%以下である。 また、 STNまたは TN用の液晶組成物を調製する場合には、 7 0重量%以下が 好ましく、 より好ましくは 6 0重量%以下である。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 ( 1 2) で表される化合物 の好ましい例として以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物は、 誘電率異方性値が負の化合物 である。 一般式 (1 0) で表される化合物は 2環化合物であるので、 主としてし きい値電圧の調整、 粘度調整または屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 —般式 ( 1 1) で表される化合物は透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広 げる目的または屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 一般式 (1 2) で表 される化合物はネマチックレンジを広げる目的の他、 しきい値電圧を小さくする 目的および屈折率異方性値を大きくする目的で使用される。
一般式 (1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物は主として誘電率異方性値が負で ある液晶組成物に使用され、 その使用量を増加させると組成物のしきい値電圧が 小さくなり、 粘度が大きくなる。 したがって、 しきい値電圧の要求値を満足して いる限り、 少なく使用することが望ましい。 しかしながら、 これらの化合物はそ の誘電率異方性の絶対値が 5以下であるので、 40重量%より少なくなると低電 圧駆動ができなくなる場合がある。 一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物 の使用量は、 誘電率異方性値が負である TFT用の組成物を調製する場合には 4 0重量%以上が好ましいが、 より好ましくは 50〜95重量%である。 また弾性 定数をコントロールし、 組成物の V— T曲線を制御する目的で、 一般式 (1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物を誘電率異方性値が正である組成物に混合する場合 もある。 この場合の一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 ( 1 2) で表される化合物の使用量は 30 重量 以下が好ましい。
また、 本発明の液晶組成物では、 〇CB (Op t i c a l l y Comp en s a t e d B i r e f r i ng en c e) モ—ド用液晶組成物等の特別な場合 を除き、 通常、 液晶組成物のらせん構造を誘起して必要なねじれ角を調整し、 逆 ねじれ (r ev e r s e twi s t) を防ぐ目的で、 光学活性化合物を添加す る。 光学活性化合物としては、 通常このような目的で使用される公知のずれの光 学活性化合物も使用できるが、 より好ましい光学活性化合物の例を以下に挙げる ことができる。

本発明の液晶組成物は、 通常、 これらの光学活性化合物を添加して、 ねじれの ピッチを調整する。 ねじれのピッチは、 TFT用および TN用の液晶組成物であ れば 40〜200 zmの範囲に調整するのが好ましく、 STN用の液晶組成物で あれば 6〜20 imの範囲に調整するのが好ましい。 また、 双安定 TN (B i s t ab l e TN) モード用の場合は、 1. 5〜 4〃 mの範囲に調整するのが好 ましい。 また、 ピッチの温度依存性を調整する目的で、 2種以上の光学活性化合 物を添加してもよい。
本発明の液晶組成物は、 慣用な方法で調製することができる。 一般には、 種々 の成分を高い温度で互いに溶解させる方法がとられている。
また、 本発明の液晶組成物は、 メロシアニン系、 スチリル系、 ァゾ系、 ァゾメ チン系、 ァゾキシ系、 キノフタロン系、 アントラキノン系、 およびテトラジン系 等の二色性色素を添加してゲストホスト (GH) モード用の液晶組成物としても 使用できる。 あるいは、 ネマチック液晶をマイクロカプセル化して作製した NC A Pや液晶中に三次元網目状高分子を作製したポリマーネッ トワーク液晶表示素 子 (PNLCD) に代表されるポリマー分散型液晶表示素子 (PDLCD) 用の 液晶組成物としても使用できる。 その他、 複屈折制御 (ECB) モードや動的散 乱 (DS) モード用の液晶組成物としても使用できる。

実施例 1
2" , 2' , 6' , 3, 4—ペン夕フルオロー 4" — (2— (4—プロピルフエ ニル) ェチル) テルフエニル (3— B 2 B ( 3 F) B ( 3, 5 F) B ( 3 F) 一 F (No. 1 ) ) の製造
(第一段) 3—フルオロー 4' —プロビルデォキシベンゾインの製造
(4—プロピルフエニル) ァセチルクロリ ド 4 8. 9 g ( 24 8. 8 mm o 1 ) 、 トリス (2, 4—ペン夕ジォナト) 鉄 ( I I 1 ) 2. 6 g ( 7. 5mmo l ) お よびトルエン 20 0 m 1の混合物中に、 1ーブロモー 3—フルォロベンゼン 5 6.
6 g ( 3 23. 5 mmo 1 ) および Mg 8. 2 g ( 3 3 5. 9 mmo l ) から調 製した G r i g n a r d試薬のテトラヒドロフラン (THF) 3 0 0 m l溶液を 一 6 0°C以下を保ちながら滴下し、 滴下終了後、 同温度で 3時間攪拌した。 次い で、 反応混合物を室温まで昇温し、 希塩酸 2 0 0 m 1を滴下した後、 ヘプタン 1 5 0 m lで抽出した。 得られた有機層を希炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で 3回、 水 で 3回洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し た後、 残查をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー (溶出液: トルエン/ヘプ夕 ン = 8 2) に付し、 粗製の 3—フルオロー 4' —プロビルデォキシベンゾイン 4 3. 3 gを得た。 このものをメタノールから再結晶して標題化合物 2 8. 5 g
を得た。 (収率 4 4. 8 %)
(第二段) 3—フルオロー ( 2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ベンゼンの 製造
前段で得られた 3—フルオロー 4 ' 一プロビルデォキシベンゾイン 1 5. 0 g ( 5 8. 5 mm 0 1 ) のトリフルォロ酢酸 4 0 m 1溶液中に氷冷下、 トリェチル シラン 2 8m l ( 1 7 5. 6 mm o 1 ) を滴下した後、 室温で 3時間攪拌した。 反応液をヘプタン 1 5 Om lで抽出し、 得られた有機層を希炭酸水素ナトリウ 厶水溶液で 3回、 水で 3回洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減 圧下に溶媒を留去した後、 残查をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー (溶出 液:ヘプタン) に付し、 粗製の 3—フルオロー (2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ベンゼン 4. 8 gを得た。 このものはこれ以上の精製を行わず次の反応 に使用した。 (収率 3 3. 9 %)
(第三段) 3—フルオロー 4ーョ— ドー (2— (4—プロピルフヱニル) ェチ ル) ベンゼンの製造
前段で得られた 3—フルォロ— (2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ベン ゼン 4. 8 g ( 1 9. 7mm 0 1 ) の THF 2.5m 1溶液中に、 s e c— B u L i 2 3m 1 ( 1. 0 4M、 シクロへキサン溶液、 2 3. 7 mm o 1相当) を— 6 0°C以下を保ちながら滴下し、 同温度で 1時間攪拌した。 次いで、 反応混合物中 にヨウ素 7. 5 g (2 9. 6mmo 1 ) の THF 2 0m 1溶液を一 6 0°C以下を 保ちながら滴下し、 同温度で 1時間攪拌した。 反応液を希チォ硫酸ナトリウム水 溶液 5 0m l中に注ぎ、 ヘプタン 5 0 m 1で抽出した。 得られた有機層を水で 3 回洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去した後、 残査をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィ一 (溶出液:ヘプ夕ン) に付し、 粗製 の 3—フルオロー 4—ョー ドー (2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ベンゼ ン 6. 5 gを得た。 このものはこれ以上の精製を行わず次の反応に使用した。 (収率 9 0. 2 %)
(第四段) 4' 一 (2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) 一 2' , 3 , 5— ト リフルォロビフエニルの製造
前段で得られた 3—フルオロー 4ーョー ド— (2— ( 4—プロピルフエニル)
ェチル) ベンゼン 6. 5 g ( 1 7. 7mmo 1 ) 、 ジヒドロキシ ( 3, 5 -ジフ ルオロフェニル) ボラン 3. 8 g (2 6. 5mmo 1 ) 、 炭酸カリウム 4. 9 g ( 3 5. 3mmo l ) 、 5 %炭素担持パラジウム 0. 5 gおよびトルエン/エタ ノールノ水 ( 1 / 1 Z 1 ) 5 Om lの混合物を 1 5時間加熱還流させた。 濾過に より触媒を除去し、 トルエン 2 5 0 m 1で抽出し、 得られた有機層を水で 3回洗 浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得られ た残査をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー (溶出液:ヘプタン Zトルエン = 9/ 1 ) に付して、 粗製の 4' 一 (2— (4—プロピルフヱニル) ェチル) ― 2' , 3, 5—トリフルォロビフエニル 5. 2 gを得た。 このものはこれ以上の 精製を行わず次の反応に使用した。 (収率: 8 7. 8 %)
(第五段) 4' 一 (2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチル) — 2' , 3, 5— ト リフルオロー 4—ョ一ドビフエニルの製造
第三段において用いた 3—フルオロー ( 2— (4—プロピルフエニル) ェチ ル) ベンゼンに代へて第四段で得られた 4' — (2— (4一プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ー 2' , 3, 5— トリフルォロビフエニル 5. 2 g ( 1 5. 5 mmo

NaH ( 6 0 %) 0. 7 g ( 1 6 2. 9 mm o 1相当) およびジメチルホル ムアミ ド (DMF) 5 m 1の混合物に、 2" , 5" , 2' — ト リフルオロー 4 - ト リフルォロメチル一 4 " ―ヒ ドロキシテルフエニル 5. 0 g ( 1 3 5. 8 mm o 1 ) の DMF 6 0m l溶液を室温で滴下し、 滴下終了後、 1時間攪拌した。 次 いで、 1ーョ一ドメチルー 4一ペンチルォキンベンゼン 6. 2 g ( 2 0 3. 6 m mo 1 ) の DMF 3 0 m l溶液を室温で滴下し、 滴下終了後、 3時間攪拌した。 該混合物を希塩酸 1 5 0m l中に注ぎ、 トルエン 1 0 0m 1で抽出した。 得られ た有機層を希炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液および水で洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネ シゥム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得られた残査をシリカゲルカラム クロマ トグラフィー (溶出液 : ヘプタン/トルエン = 1ノ 1 ) に付して、 粗製の 2" , 5 " , 2 ' 一 ト リフルオロー 4— ト リ フルォロメチルー 4 " 一 ( ( 4ーぺ ンチルォキシフエニル) メ トキシ) テルフエニルを得た。 このものをエタノール Z酢酸ェチル (8 2) 混合溶媒から再結晶して標題化合物を得た。

本発明の液晶性化合物は極めて高い電圧保持率を有し、 その温度変化が極めて 小さく、 低いしきい値電圧および大きな Δηを有する。 また、 本発明の液晶性化 合物は置換基および結合基を適当に選択することにより、 所望の物性を有する新 たな液晶性化合物を提供することができる。
産業上の利用可能性
従って、 本発明の液晶性化合物を液晶組成物の成分として用いることにより、 極めて高い電圧保持率を有し、 その温度変化が極めて小さく、 適切な大きさの厶 ηおよび Δ £を有し、 安定性および他の液晶材料との相溶性に優れている新たな 液晶組成物を提供することができ、 これを用いてィンブレーンスィツチング ( I PS) 方式ゃヴアーティカルァラインメント (VA) 方式の優れた液晶表示素子 を提供することができる。
