- Such lamp units which are provided with at least one, expediently high-pressure gas discharge tube and to which the gas discharge tube containing G-gas bulb is fastened in some way to a ballast which is necessary for actuating the gas discharge tube .
- the ballast is equipped with the well-known threaded lamp base of the incandescent lamps, which is why this compact lamp unit can be screwed into the incandescent lamp holder without any special expertise. It is customary to call such a lamp unit an energy-saving lamp unit, since the high-pressure gas discharge tube consumes one-fourth to one-third less energy than the incandescent lamp at the same light intensity.

- a solution is known according to which the electrodes of the gas discharge tube are bound to the power supply pins protruding from the lamp bulb and these are inserted into the resilient contact sockets mounted on the ballast.
- the disadvantage of this construction is that in the manufacture of incandescent lamps, the melting down of the lamp bulb has to be carried out using a more expensive method instead of the usual reliable and cheap glass technology.
- the ballast should be of smaller size, i.e. the lamp unit should not differ in geometric sizes from the incandescent lamp, in whose place it is to be used.
- the 50 - 60 Hz mains current is converted into a high-frequency current because the current-limiting choke coil of the gas discharge tube can have a smaller geometric size, since a lower inductance value is required proportionally to achieve the same impedance with increasing frequency.
- Such a high-frequency generator of the high-frequency ballast is expediently of an electronic design, and it must be fed by a rectifier.
- This set of rectifiers also contains an energy storage filter capacitor, which is one of the largest components of the geometric size of the high-frequency ballast and consequently its arrangement is problematic.
- One of the objectives of the invention is that the high-frequency ballast can be easily attached to the lamp bulb of common construction and design, its flexible power supply retained.
