UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN IHLENBURG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MACKELLAR, SMITHS 8; JORDAN, OF SAME PLACE.
OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,324, dated June 21, 1881,
Application filed May 6, 1881. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, (assignor to MACKELLAR, SMITHS 8: J OR- DAN,) of the city and county of Philadelphia,
5 Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in (O the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made; and it consists of a lightfaced letter, somewhat resembling the style known as Medireval.
In the A, H, and J the upper portions of the 15 letters consist of the horizontal line with dot terminationin the A and J upon the left, in the H upon the right. In theA the left-hand portion of the letter gradually widens toward the center as it curves, and is then thinned,
2o curving to the right, and has a dot termination. In the B the central portion curves inward and has the dot termination. In the C the lower termination upon' the right is volute in its character, the upper termination gradu- 2 ally widened, and having a point below and dot above upon the left. In the E and F the central line terminates in a heavy dot. Both the upper and lower terminations of the E upon the right gradually widen and have the The upper termination of the F and lower termination of the L upon the right consist of the curved line terminating in a dot. The lower cross termination of theG consists of acurved line upon the 35 left, with dot termination. The right-hand lower portion of the H is similar to the lefthand portion of the A. The upper portion of the K upon the right curves and gradually widens toward its upper portion. Its lower 40 right-hand portion curves downward, widens about centrally, and is then thinned, followed by a dot. The lower portion of the J upon the left is volute-like. The base of the M and upper portion of the T consist of a horizontal 5 line with dot terminations. The central portion of the M is expanded to form a rhomboidlike figure. The rest of the letter is formed of the lines curving outward from the central portion to the base. The right-hand portion of the N curves, gradually widens, and is then thinned, and has the dot termination. The O has placed within it, about centrally, the dots. as shown. The lower cross portion of the P consists of a horizontal line extending to the right and having the dot termination. Its upper right-hand portion is curved and has the dot termination. The Q is ornamented within, about centrally, by the dots, as in the case of the O, and its tail consists of an inclined line having a dot at its upper end. From its base extends a line flattened out upon the right and inclined upon the rightside. The upper righthand portion of the R curves to the right and terminates in the dot. Its lower portion consists of an inclined line flattened out at its base. Both terminations of the S are flattened out and have the inclined sides. The lower right-hand termination of the T is volute-like in its character. The upper left-hand portion of the U is flattened out and has the inclined sides. The upper right-hand portion has the heavy dot termination. The up and-down portions, near the base, are enlarged to form the triangular ornaments. In the V the base con sists of the curved line with dot terminations, the up-and-down portions of the letter of the curved lines, and ornamented at top by the short lines with (lot terminations. The central portion of the W is ornamented above by the rhomboid-like ornament, its upper portion by the lines with dot terminations. The upper portion of the Y, upon the left, is ornamented by the line with dot termination. Its lower portion curves to the left and has the dot termination. Both terminations of the Z have the curved lines terminating in the dots.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is- The design for a font of printing-types, as shown and described.
HERMAN IHLENBURG. In presence of- C. F. HUoH, HERMAN Marius.
