UNITED STATES HERMAN IHLENBURG, OF
PATENT OEEICEo PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MAGKELLAR, SMITHS & JORDAN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 13,923, dated May 22, 1883, Application tiled March 12, 1883. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, HERMAN IHLENBUEG, (assigner to MACKELLAR, SMrrHs & J oRDAN,) ofthe city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Type, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made; and it consists of an unshaded letter having the volute termination, as shown. In the A, O, E, F, M, O, Q, U, and X the volute termination is formed upon the right of the letter; in the others in which it occurs upon the left. The A, B, H, J, M, N, O, P, Q, T, X, and Y are extended below the line. 1n the I, N, W, and Z the volute termination does not occur. The A, E, F, H, N, W, and Z are ornamented about centrally by the short horizontal line, in some cases shaded by a. line below.
In the lower-case the character of the design is preseved, the volute termination being found in the f,j, h, v, W, and y, and the a, b, d, e, g,
o, p, and q being ornamented by the short inz 5 clined line crossing the face of the letter. In connection with the lower-case three aflixes are shown-the one upon the left a ray-shaped figure made up of a series of short inclined lines radiating from a common center and having 3o the heavy dot termination, and that upon the left consisting of a short horizontal line the right-hand extremity of which curls upward and to the left, and the third aix simply a small heavy dot. rlhe m, n, and z of the lower- 35 case are extended below the line, and the v and w above the line.
1n the numerals, except the 7, the volute ornamentation is found.
Having now described my invention, I claim 4o as new- The design for a font of printing-type, as shown and described.
HERMAN IIILENBURG.
