DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,361, dated May 31,1887.

Application filed April 30, 1887. Serial No. 236,710.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, (assignor to the MAoKELLAR, SMITHS 86 J on- DAN COMPANY,) of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for aFont of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made; and it consists of a font of type of the classknown as Missal.

The upper portion of the A, B, D, E, F, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z is extended upon theleft of the up-and-down portion, curves to the right, and terminatesin the dot. The triangular ornamentation is found upon the left at the base of the A, H, K, M, N, and X, while the lower right-hand termination of the A, G, M, N, and P is flattened out and succeeded by the short inclined line. The upper rounding portion of the B, G, G, O, P, Q, and R terminates in the dot, as shown. The cross ornaments of the A and H consist of a horizontal line crossed about centrally by a vertical line.

TheB D EFKM N P Rhave the up anddown portion shaded upon the right hand by a light line, as shown, while the J, U, W, and Y are shaded by a light line upon the left, while the faces of the D, M, N, '1, U, V, W, and Y are ornamented by the light inclined line, and those of the O, O, Q, V, andXby the light vertical line.

The lower right-hand termination of the E, L, and Z is ornamented by the dot termination, found also upon the right at the upper portion of the F and L. I

As far as possible, the character of the de- Torm of patent 14 years,

sign is preserved in the lower-case, notably in the c, e, h, m, n, t, u, v, w, x, y, and z, and in the numerals, notably the 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9.

Having now set forth my invention, I claim as new- The design for a font of printing-type, as shown and described, the upper portion of the A, B, D, E, F, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, T, U, V, \V, X, Y, and Z extended upon the left of the up-and-down portion, curved to the right and terminating in the dot, the triangular ornamentation found upon the left at the base of the A, H, K, M, N, and X, while the lower right-hand termination of the A, G, M, N, and P is flattened out and succeeded by the short inclined line, the upper rounding portion of the B, G, G, O, P, Q, and It terminating in the dot, as shown, the cross ornaments of the A and H. consisting of a horizontal line crossed about centrally by a vertical line, the B D E F K M N P R having the up-anddown portion shaded upon the right hand by a light line, while the J, U, W, and Y are shaded by a light line upon the left, and the faces of the D, M, N, T, U, V, W, and Y are ornamented by the light inclined line, and those of the C, O, Q, V, and X by the light vertical line, the lower right-hand termination of the E, L, and Z ornamented by the dot termination, found also upon the right at the upper portion of the F and L, and the character of the design preserved as far as possible in the lower-case, notably in the c, e, h, m, n, t, u, v, w, X, y, and z, and in the numerals, notably the 2, 3, 5, 6,

and 9.
