WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN IHLENBURG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MAGKELLAR, SMITHS & JORDAN, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification formingpart of Design No. 10,446, dated February 12, 1878; application filed December 6, 1877. [Term of patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, (assignor to MACKELLAR, SMITHS & J 012mm,) of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of .my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made; and consists of a heavy letter of ornamental form, the body of which is further ornamented by a filigree groundwork filling in the open parts of the face of the types. The letters are further ornamented by the central open dots in theupper and lower edges of the heavy ends of the vertical and horizontal lines, and in the inner edges of the heavy parts of the curved lines of the letters B, O, D, G, K, O, P, Q, R, and S. In the letters B, D, E, F, H, I, K, L, M, N, P, R, V, W, and Y, the up-and' down parts of the letters are wider at the top and bottom, the same being concaved upon the right and left; and in the letter X the upand-down parts are made wider at the top and bottom.
The top cross-part of the letter A is pro vided with inclined sides, and is slightly concaved upon its upper side. The central lines incline from the interior of the u.p-and-down parts to the center, where they meet. The rounding lines of theB are curled. The lower forward portion of the letter O is curved slightly, and the upper forward portion is composed of an inclined line, the lower portion of which terminates outward in a dot or ball.
In the letters E and F the concaved quadrangular central ornaments are employed; and in the letter F, from the forward upper portion of the same projects downward a line, the lower end of which is curled outward.
In the letter G the forward upper portion projects downward and has inclined sides, while the lower portion is provided with a line extending inward and. terminating in a curl.
The central cross-lines of the letter H are similar to those of the letter A.
The lower portion of the J terminates in a line extending upward, and terminating in a dot or ball, and is further ornamented by a line turned inward and then outward, and terminating in a curl or part curl.
In the letter K the lower forward termination is concaved upon the right, as shown.
In the letter L the lower portion terminates in a curled line.
In the letter M the up-and-down parts of the letter are connected by the curved lines, and from these is suspended the concaved quadrangular ornament.
The upper forward portion of the P terminates in the curled line.
In the letter Q the lower portion of the letter is crossed by the partially-curved line, having curled terminations.
The upper forward or right-hand termination of the R is curled.
The'letter S has the curled termination upon the left, and the termination upon the right is concaved.
The T has its upper portion provided with the lines projecting downward and curved outward.
The U has its upper concaved upon the left and right.
In the W the up-and-down portion of the letter are connected together by the curved lines, surmounted by a concaved quadrangular ornament.
In the Z the sides of the top and bottom ternimations are concaved, and curl in one instance to the left and in the other to the right.
Having now described my design, what I claim as new is- The design for a font of printing-type, as shown and described.
HERMAN IHLENBURG.
In presence of O. F. HUGH, H. MEHIRS.
