SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,175, dated March 13, 1888.

Application tiled January 11, 188B. Serial No. 260,456. Term of patent 14 years.

Be it known that I, WARREN BARNHART, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State ot Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing4` Tpe, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographic impressions, which are exact representations of said design.

The character of this design is a moderately heavy solid-faced somewhat condensed type, without ornamentation, comprising capitals, small letters, characters, and points. Its chief peculiarity is the ending of the upper ends of the stem-lines of the M, V, WV, and Y in the capitals and of the v and w in the small letters. This ending is a loop or hook turned to the left in the V and W, the hook on the right-hand stem being larger than that on the left hand. Minor peculiarities are the formation ofthe small g, in which the circle is above the baseline and the lower part is simply a waved line ending in a sharp point; also the ending of the small c and eand capital C in a downward stroke ending in a point and not turning upward, as in an ordinary font; also the finishing-strokes of the small letters 11, k, in, n, and s, which extend below the line and are a long taper ending in a dot; also, the main stems of the capitals F, H, M, N, P, R, and Y extend below the line and turned to the left slightly and end in a sharp point; also, the capital J has a long stem and the hook consists in a short waveline below the base-line; also, one stem ofthe capitals H, I, N, and U terminates at its npper end in a Haine-like line inclined to the right.

I claim-- The design for a font of printing-type herein described and shown, having medium heavy solid\faced somewhat condensed letters, without ornamentation, and comprising capitals, small letters, characters, and points, and hav ing letters, as M, V, YV, and Y and the W and v, whose stems terminate at their upper ends in hooks turned to the left, said hook being in the right-hand stem of the capital V and W larger than that of the left stem, and in the v and W both larger and above the line; also having letters, as H, I, N, and U, having one stem terminating at its upper end in a tlame-like wave-line inclined to the right; also having small letters, as h, k, m, n, and s, who/se tinishingstroke extends below the line and is a long taper ending in a dot.
