Description

DESIGN.
J. SGHMQHLEE. LAUSCHKE. FONT OP PRINTING TYPE.
No. 19,775. Patented Apr. 22, 1890.
ABCDEFGHldK-LMN ompeswvwxvm ..::l?-123 L56789O UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEU JULIUS SCIIMOIIL AND ERNST LAUSCIIKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO BARNIIART BROTHERS & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,775, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed January 2. 1890. Serial No. 335,687. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JULIUS SCHMOHL and ERNST LAUSGHKE, both subjects of the Einperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical 1o impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises capitals, character 4&3, figures, and points. In general style it is som ewhat grotesque, quite extended, and each of its letters and characters hasboth light and heavy lines in strong contrast, the light lines being hair-lines and the heavy lines quite uniformly heavy throughout the entire length of all straight lines, curved lines being swell-shaded from hair-lines to the full width of the heavy straight lines.
The design is further particularly characterized by the form of capital B, which has both the bows parabolic in form, the upper bow having its lower line produced obliquely '2 5 to about the middle point of the stem, and the lower bow having its upper line in like manner produced obliquely in a direction which would meet the upper end of the stem, which causes it to meet the lower line of the upper bow nearly at right angles about midway in the length of said line, and at a considerable distance, therefore, from the stem. A further characteristic is found in capital K, which has the upper oblique element a hair-line throughout, except at the very extremity, the upper portion being curled over toward the right, forming a semicircular drooping hook. Another characteristic is shown in the letter J, which has its stein heavy and slightly expanded at the lower end at the point where the curved portion takes ofi from the stem, producing the appearance of a stunted ceriph. Capitals I and R exhibit another characteristic, their ovals being about three-quarters of a circle, 5 whereby they seem to droop from the point of connection to the stem, said ovals extending considerably more than half the height of the letter.
A characteristic which is prevalent throughout the design is that the hair-lines deviate slightly from straight lines, being either slightly bowed or slightly circumflex.
We claim- The design forafont of printing-type herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands, in the presence of two witnesses, at Chicago, Illinois, this 27th day of December, 1889.
JULIUS SCHMOHL. ERNST LAUSCHKE.
