SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,239, dated April 3.1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

-Be it known that I, ERNST LAUsci-IKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and Stateof Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, which are exact representations of said design.

This design consists of upper and lowercase letters, bracket and ornament, points, figures, and dollar-mark. Its general character is considerably extended, of medium weight, reudered rudely and somewhat grotesquely ornate by reason oi' all lines being irregular, and of un even Width. It is specially marked by the form ofthe ovals of lower-case a and p and capital D, said ovals being changed from the regular form into irregular helices, such helix being in lower-case a joined at its upper end only to the stem,and the helix in lower-case p being joined at its lower end only to the stem, and the helix in capital D beingjoined at its upper end only to the stein, this mode of connecting to the stein being the reverse of that which would be natural in striking the letters with a pen by hand. It is further marked by the fact that all ceriphs are blunt and irregular, and instead of ccriphs capitals U and V have irregular appendages, the former at the left hand and the lutter at the right, that of capital V being hooked, making two angles, and that of capital U making but one angle with the stem. A further peculiarity is found in capital G, which has an irregular short cross-stroke at the inner inturned end of the irregular curve which forms the outline of said letter.

I claim- The design for a font of printnglype herein shown and described, which is rudely and somewhat grotesqnely ornate, of medium Weight, considerably extended, with liuesirregular and unnniform width, the letters generally having irregular eeriphs, capitals U and V having rude appendages instead of ceriphs, capital having an irregularcrosssiroke atits lowerinturned end,and lowercasea and pand capital D having their ovals irregularly helical, those of a and D bei ngjoined to the stems at the upper end only and that of p being joined tothe stem at the lowerend only,substantially as set forth.
