HENRY DE \VITT AND CHARLES E. TIEDE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN- ORS TO BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,364, dated. October 22, 1889. Application filed September 26, 1889- Berial No. 326,217. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY W. DE WITT and CHARLES E. TIEDE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
The general character of this design is a somewhat ornamental heavy-faced Gothic, somewhat extended, comprising lower-case letters, capitals, figures, points, dollar-mark,
and the character A special characteristic of the design is a heavy-swell terminal, which is present in many of the letters, both lowercase and capitals, the position and relation of such swell to the latter varying in different letters. It is found in the involute terminal of the lower-case c, e, and s, in the final upper terminal of character dz, and in the lower terminal of capital S. It is present in a pcculiar form as the right-hand terminal of the cross-stroke of capitals A and H, said crossstroke being extended beyond-that is, to the right ofthe right-hand principal stroke of the letter. In these situations it resembles the above-mentioned terminal of character it, being a heavy upwardly-convex and downwardly-concave swell, short horizontally relatively to its greatest width vertically. The same general characteristic takes another pcculiar form in the lower horizontal stroke of capitals E and L, which are deflected below the line and gradually swelled toward the end, terminating in a downwardly-convex and upwardly-concave swell ending in a comparatively sharp point at the line, almost the entire swell being below the line. The characteristic of capital Q is another instance of a similar feature, such characteristic occupying a position with respect to the line like that of the above-described lower horizontal strokes of capitals E and L. Capital G is peculiar in having its vertical characteristic stroke of uniform width, unusually heavy, and making a right angle with the lower end of the oval at the line, and having no crossstroke. Capital H, besides having the peculiarity above described as to its cross-stroke, is further distinguished by having its two upright strokes of uniform width and both very heavy and set equally inclined toward each other. Capital U has its right-hand stroke lighter than the left hand and extending above the line, the two strokes converging upwardly, giving the letter ahorseshoe shape. The final strokes of capitals V and W, being lighter than the initial stroke, make a junction with the preceding stroke slightly above the lower end of the latter, and a similar characteristic is noticeable in capital N. In that case, however, it is the oblique stroke which joins the final stroke slightly below its lower end.
We claim- The design for afont of printing-type herein shown and described, characterized by the cross-strokes of A and H, which are extended beyond the right-hand stroke and terminate in an upwardly-convex and downwardly-concave swell, and by the lower horizontal strokes of capitals E and L, deflected below the line and terminating in a downwardly-convex and upwardly-concave swell, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands, in the presence of two witnesses, at Chicago, Illinois.
