DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,727, dated September 20, 1887.
Application filed August 15, 1867.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WIL IAM F. CAPITAIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Type, of which the followingisa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention consists of a new design for a font of printing-type of medium-size lines, most of which lines are slightly enlarged and provided with fine short ceriphs at their beginning or terminal ends, and each letter, fig ure, point, and character is ornamented with a fine shade-line in front and below the lines of the letters, &e., the new design consisting of the above-named and other peculiar characteristics of the letters, as herein fully described, shown, and claimed.
The back lines of A, H, K, M, N, R and the stems of P, T, Y are elongated downward, and by a short curve are extended backward, and are slightly enlarged at their ends and terminate with fine short oblique ceriph-lines.
The upper curved portions of B, D, P, and Rextend backward beyond and are disconnected from the vertical lines of these letters, and these baekwardlyextended lines are slightly enlarged at their ends and terminate with fine short ceriphlines.
The middle portions of E F consist of straight lines connected at their lower ends with the vertical lines of the letters, and are upwardly and forwardly inclined, enlarged at their forward ends, and terminate in fine short vertical ceriph-lines.
The lower front portion of G consists of a straight vertical line slightly enlarged at each end and terminating with fine short eeriphlines.
The middle portion of H consists of adownwardly-curved line connecting with the vertical lines.
The distinguishing portion of Q consists of a line beginning within the lower portion of the letter, and, being slightly curved, is extended obliquely downward and backward,
Serial No. 247,014.
Term of potent 3?; years.
and by an acute angle is extended forward and is curved slightly upward, and both ends of the line are slightly enlarged and terminate with fine short ceriph-lines.
The upper portion of the front lines of V and 'W are, by a short slight curve, inclined back ward, and are slightly enlarged at their ends and terminate with fine short ceriph-lines.
The body of the lower-case a consists of a horizontal oval, the front portion of which connects with the front line of the letter, which front line curves backward over the body of the letter, and is extended obliquely downward and terminates slightly below and in front of the lower front portion of the oval.
The body of the lowercase letters b, d, p, (1 each consists of the section of a true circular line, each sectional end of which lines connects with the stern of the letter, which consists of a vertical straight line.
The letter 0 is the section of a true circle.
e is the same as c with a straight line ex tending from the upper front point obliquely downward to the lower curved portion of the letter.
The upper portion of g is a true circle, having a short line extended upward obliquely to the right, and the lower portion of this letter consists of a line connected with the lower left-hand portion of the letter and extended straight a short distance downward obliquely to the left, and by an acute angle is extended horizontally forward, and then by a curve is extended backward horizontally, terminating slightly back of the left line of the letter.
The front portions of h, m, and n consist of straight oblique lines curved backward at the top and connected with the left-hand vertical portions of these letters.
The back portion of n and y consists of a straight oblique line curved forward at the bottom and connected with the front vertical line of the letter.
The front lines of v and w are elongated upward, and by a short curve the extended portions of these lines are inclined slightly backward and slightly enlarged at the ends, terminating in fine short ceriph-lines.
Each letter, figure, point, and character of the font is ornamented by a light shade-line in front and below the lines of the letters, 82c.
\Vhat I claim as new is The design for a font of printing-type of medium shaded lines, in which font the ends of most of the lines are slightly enlarged and are provided with fine short ceriph-lines, the backlines ofA, H, K, M, N, R, and the stems of [O I, T, Y are elongated downward and inclined backward, the upper portions of V W are inelined backward, and the front lines of v and w are extended upward and inclined backward, these and the other portions of the font being all formed as herein described, and as shown 15 in the typographical impressions.
