UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS IIERRIET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO DAVID \YOLFE BRUCE, O1 SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF ORNAMENTAL PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,169, dated August 6, 1878; application tiled July 15, 1878.
[Term of patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS HERRIEI, of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for a Font ot' Ornamental Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, which serves as drawing, and to which reference is made; and consists of capitals, points, and figures of old-stylecharacter, with heavy body-lines tapering upward and downward from the center into very heavy terminations at the short-pointed ceriphs.
The rounded portions of the letter or character swell into almost conical form at their heavier parts, and the pendants to the 0,1), F, G, T, and Z, and the corresponding portions at the bottom of the E, L, and Z, have pointed angles, the terminating point projecting ontward. The lower point of the tongues of the E and F also project outward in the same manner. At the right-hand and lower portions of the letter or character, following the general course of the body-lines, and nearly parallel thereto, is a shade-line-a heavy hair-linewhose object is to give the letter a thick blockletter-like appearance. cross-lines formed by two curved lines meeting in the center, their extremities forming an angle pointing downward, the two free extremities being carried through and outside of the body-lines of the letter, terminating in balls or disks. The lower rounded portion of the B is carried below the line into ahair-line curving about and inelosing the foot of the The A and H have stem, terminating outside and almost in con tact with the stem-line. The upper rounded portion of the R terminates at the center of the letter in a ball or disk, and its curved pointed tail is suspended from a hair-line curving from the ball or disk to connect with its upper extremity. The lower rounded portions of the J and U project outward into points, and several other of the letters or characterssuch' astl-e A at the top, the M and N with the V at the nottom, the ligurc 4 also at the top, and the W at both top and bottom-have somewhat similar prqiectiug points. The P has the rounded portion terminating in a ball or disk similar to that of the It.
The whole design ditiers from each and every other, either because of its great weight, both of body and hair lines; because of the taper from the center upward and downward into heavier extremities; because of the very short-poiuted ccriphs, almost equivalent to their entire removal; because of the peculiar formation of the rounded portions and the pendants and tongues, the crosslines of the A and H, and the addition of the shade-line; or, lastly, because of being what is called an old-style letter, which in itself easily dis tingnishes it from any ordinary Roman letter of anything like similar ornamentation.
What I claim as' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design or pattern for a font of ornamental printingtypes, as shown and described.
JULIUS HERRIET.
