UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY RREEMER, or sTAPLEToN, AssrGNoR To DAVID woLEE BRUCE, or
NEw YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR FONT OF ORNAMENTAL PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,291, dated November 6, 1877*, application filed October 22, 1877. [Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it kuoim that I, HENRY BREHMER, of Stapleton, county of Richmond, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for a Font of Ornamental Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, which serves as drawing; and consists of capitals, points, and figures of ordinary Roman style, greatly condensed and slightly modified and ornamented. The ceriphs are very short or simple pointed projections formed by a tapering increase in the width of the body-lines at their extremities.
The pendants to the E, F, and T, and corresponding portions at the top of the C, Gr, S, and Z, and bottom of the E, L, S, and Z, curve or iiow slightly outward toward their points, 'being slightly concave on their outside edge, and slightly convex on the inner.
The tongues of the'E and F are likewise concave on their outside edge, and convex toward the point connecting them with thebodyline. The hair-line at the lower right-hand side of the G and U has slightly-increased weight of thickness. The cross-lines of the A and Hare formed by two small curved lines, one heavy, the other a light or hair line projecting from the body-line on either side, connectin g on their convex side near their extremities, and forming a point lmidway between the body-lines, pointing downward'in the A, but upward in the H. Below the crossline in the H, a small figure resembling a spear or arrow head is suspended, point downward.
The balls or disks of the J 2 3 5 6 9 and the dollar-sign are transformed into gures resembling curling or curved leaves or plumes.
Small pointed tooth-like iigures project upward and downward, above and below, from the extremities of the body-lines midway between the ends of the `ceriphs, and fromother portions of the letters or characters.
The design differs from each and every other, either because of its great condensation; its comparative heavy or light weight 5 in the shortness of its ceriphs, and the taper of the body-lines into them; the curving of the pendants and corresponding portions, as described above; the increased weight of the hair-lines in the C and U 5 the shape and connection of the cross-lines of the A and H the substitution of the curved leaf-like figures or plumes for the balls or disks in certain characters, also mentioned above; or because of the shape and location of the tooth-like fig ures, and their connection with the body of the letter or character.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ldesign or pattern of or for a font of ornamental printing-types, as shown and described.
