Description

DRAWING F'AE E UHQUQILQBLE DOCUMENT NUMBER UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE G. BAILEY, JR., AND JAMES GILBERT, OF BOSTON, MASS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 8,889, dated January 11, 1876; application filed October 7, 1875.
[Term of Patent 7 years] To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE GARDNER BAILEY, J r., and JAMES GILBERT, both of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Types, representin g the letters and characters of the English alphabet, of which the following is a specification The letters shown comprise both the upper and lower cases. The style is that known in the trade as the black letter.
The peculiarities in type-faces we herewith submit are these: The body-lines are shaded with a single thin or hair parallel line, the same bearing a dot at each end. This hairline is in some instances on the right and in others on the left of the letter, and in others on both sides. In the capitals G, G, M, N. O, Q, Z, and 85 the shade-line is seen at the top. In the capitals A, B, G, D, G, I, J, M, N, 0, Q, S, T, U, V, W, Z, and 85, it is seen at the bottom. Ornamental shading is attached at the sides of the capitals, to either the right or the left side, and in some cases to both sides; also, at the bottom in the capitals B, U, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z. In the lower-case the hair-shade lines are also present at one or both sides; and,
further, hair-lines in the form of scrolls are present in the body of some of the letters, as in '7 7 7 d, 6, 7 7 a 7 1 p 7 7 7 7 v, w, y, and the interrogation-mark. In 0, e, f, r, and t, a perpendicular hair-line drops down from the extreme right, curves outward, and is terminated by a dot. The dots of the i and j, and the upper dots of the semicolon and colon, are four-pointed curvilinear-sided stars, with the hair-line shading on the lower side. The quotation-mark is similarly ornamented. Both the upper and lower case letters are unusually wide, thus allowing great weight to the face of the letters. The ornamental scroll-work, to be attached to the beginning and end of a word or line, is to be noted. This is composed of a series of scrolls, which scrolls are mostly terminated at their outer ends by dots. The larger of the two is for capitals or upper-case, the smaller one shown is for the lowercase-letters.
We claim The design for a font of printing-type, a described and shown.
