DESIGN FOR TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,860, dated January 15, 1889. Application filed October 3, 1888 Serial No. 287,096. Term of patent 7 years.

Be it known that I, ANDREWLITTLE, a citizen of New York, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing'l` 'pe; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the'same, referenee being had to the accompanying facsimile, forming a part thereof.

The nature of the design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made; and it consists in aheavy unshaded letter, as shown.

Referring first to the capital letters, the top of the A and the oblique heavy part of the K and thebottom of the G and the oblique parts of the M,`N, V, and W are concave. The tops of the C, E, F, G, S, T, and Z and the bottoms of the E, L, S, and Z have two eoncaves on the outside, these ends projecting at an angle to the main portion of the letters. The heavy oblique portions of the K, M, N, V, and W pass across the light portions, Where they join. The tail of the Q consists of a fine line drawn to the left and a horizontal reverse curved dash increasing gradually and then diminishing gradually in thickness and having an upward fine line at the end.

Referring to the lower-case letters, the tops of the b, d, h, i, j, k, and l, first part of m, n, p, r, t, and u, and the bottoms of the v, w, and y are concave. The top of the q and the bottom of the b are notched. The front of the e is eut off at an angle, the fine line running back- Ward downwardly. The tops and bottoms of the s and y. have two concaves on the out side, these ends projecting at an angle to the main portions of the letters. The heavy oblique portions of the v, w, and y pass across the light portions, where they join.

Referring to the figures, 1 has the concave at the top. 4 has the concave at the top of its stem and in front of its top portion.` has the concave in the front of its top.

The type set forth by this design is of the Old Style Aldine cllaraeteristic, and the leading feature of the design is heavy-lined letters narrow in proportion to their height, so that the letters are compact, the doublelined letters, as ll, NV, cte., being closed almost together. The ceriphs at the tops of the vertical lines in the capitals are plain. In the oblique lilies the curved eeriphs are at the bottoni, except in the A, K, R, X, and Z.

The leading characteristics of the lower-case letters are that c has the upper end curved inwardly sharply to a point, f the same, g has the top curved forward, s and zhave slantingpointed eoncaved eeriphs, and v, w, and y have curved ceriphs at the bottom of their oblique lines.

Having now described my invention, I claim- The design for a font of printing-type, as shown.
