Description

"DESTC N.
R. SMITH. Font of Printing-Types.
No. 11,164. Patented April 15,1879,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
RICHARD SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MACKELLAR, SMITHS 8c JORDAN, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
bpecilication forming part of Design No. 11,164, dated April 15, 1879; application filed March ll, 1979. [Term of patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SMITH, (assignor to MACKELLAR, SMITHS & J 031mm,) of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced anew and original Design fora Font of Printing- Types, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impressions, to which reference is made.
Itconsists of a letter which may be considered as composed of parts: First, the letter-form, bounded by straight and curved lines. Second, below the horizontal lines of all the letters and the slightly-curved lines of the C, E, F, G, S, and Z are shaded spaces, giving the appearance of a receding face to each of the letters. These shaded spaces are bounded on the up per side by the boundaries of the letter-form, and on the right and left by oblique lines parallel, extending downward to the left.
The shading is formed by short horizontal or slightly-curved lines parallel with the boundaries of the letter-forms, and these lines are heavier at the left, so that they touch each other.
The letters have at the left of the letter-form shaded spaces, the boundaries of which on the right are the portions of the letter-form on the left vertical lines, the upper and lower boundaries being obliqueliues, extending down and to the left parallel with the boundaries of the shading below the horizontal lines. The shading of these spaces is formed by vertical lines, which are heavier as they are farther from the boundary-lines of the letter-form.
Below and extending down and to the left from the oblique lines of the letters C, G, J, 0, Q, and U are shaded spaces, the outlines of which are the lines of the letter-form and right and left boundary-lines, which are oblique, inclined down and to the left parallel with the boundary of the shading below the horizontal lines.
The shading is formed by oblique lines parallel with the oblique boundary-lines, the heaviest lines being uppermost.
All the letters seem to project from a monotone background, and the shaded portions of the letters extend downward to the lower line of the monotone background.
In the letters B, D, O, I, Q, and R the vertical lines forming the interior shading are heavier at the top. In the letter A the interior shading is formed by "ertical lines.
In the figures the design is preserved.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is- The design for a font of printing-types, as shown and described.
RICHARD SMITH.
In presence of- O. F. HUGH, HERMAN METrr's.
