Description

DESIGN.
' O. SOHRA ADTER, Jr.
FONT 0? me TYPE.
No. 24,807. Patented Oct. 29; 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL SOl-IRAUBSTADTER, JR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part or Design are. 24,807, dated October 29, 1895. Application filed September 27, 1895. Serial 563.91?- Term ofpatent 14 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SOHRAUBSTADTER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented and produced a new and useful De- Sign for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, showing a part thereof.
The drawing shows a face view of a font of type comprising upper and lower cases.
The leading features of my design consist in having light hair-lines and exceedingly heavy main lines, and in place of the ceriphs, which ordinarily extend in a horizontal direction at the top and bottom corners of the heavy vertical lines, I use a small wedgeshaped hair-line at thejunction of the horizontal and vertical boundaries of these main lines, this hair-line extending at an angle of fortyfive degrees from both of these boundaries. This feature is also adopted in some of the heavy letters and letters having straight lines not vertical, as capitals G, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y, and Z, lower-case v, w, x, and y, and in the punctuationmarks, which are rectilinear instead of round. Such parts of the letters as are ordinarily crescent-shaped, being convex on the outside of the letter and concave on the inside, have the outer contour of the usual shape, while the inner contour is a compound curve, giving the surface a tearshaped appearance. This is exemplified in capitalsBC D GOPQR,figures3 568 9 0 &, and lower-case a, b, c, d, e, g, o, p, and q. The ceriphs in some of the letters, instead of being confined within the space outlined by the top and bottom lines of the letter, extend beyond it the same distance as on the other side. This is shown at the top and bottom of capital E, top of capital F, bottom of capital L, top of capital T, top and bottom of capital Z, cross-line of figure 4., cross-line of lowercase f and t, and top and bottom of lower-case z. The cross line and top of capital A each consist of compound-curved lines, as does also the cross-line of capital H. The center and bottom line of second capital E, top line of sec- 0nd capital F, and bottom of second capital L are also compound-curved lines, but heavier on the ends farthest removed from the main line of the letter. In addition to the small hair-lines the hair-lines on capitals A K N U V W X Y and lower-case k, v, x, and y end in triangles, at the ends of the extreme corners of which the fine hair-lines first referred to are placed. The dots on the lower-case i and 3', instead of being round or square, as is usually the case, are triangular. There is also provided, in addition to the square one, a triangular period. Other letters, in which the hair-lines ordinarily end in a round or ovalshaped ball, have these balls hollowed out on the inside, while the outside remains convex, as shown in capital J, figures 2 3 5 and lower-case f, j, r, and y. Other letters which ordinarily have ceriphs at these points are equipped with an appendix similar to these last-named characters, as the capitals O and S.
Certain of the lower-case letters have their upper curved contours extending slightly beyond the main line and joined to it by small ceriphs. These are the h, m, and n, and the same thing applies to lower contours of the t and 11.
What I claim is- The design for a font of printing type as herein shown and described.
CARL SCHRAUBSTADTER, JR. Witnesses:
HENRY ROEDER, ERNEST Ronnrnve.
