@KLMWWMWWMW WWW WQW iWw/W WW H Z$A23iy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WEST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROS. & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 23,107, dated March e, 1894.
Application filed December 21, 1893. Serial No. 494,353- Term of patent 14 years.
['0 M5 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Bounty of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for a Font of Script Type, which ls fully set forth in the following specificazion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises upper case and lower e letters, figures, points, dollar mark and character 85. The general character of the design isa hair-line-and-shade upright script without marked pecularities in the lower case letters, but having all the upper case letters, with two exceptions, characterized by a hair line curve flourish extending obliquely below the line, such hair line connecting with the top of stem of letters which have a stem, and originating or merging in a loop at the upper part of the letters which are without stems. Of the first class, B, F, H, K, L, P, and T are instances. Of the second, A, C, D, E, G, I, M, N, O, S, U, V, W, X, Y and Z are instances. Capital J, of the conventional form having the loop below the line, lacks this hair-line flourish, but in lieu of it has a hairline of the loop extended across the stem, and in the case of capital Q, the hair line is looped within the oval of the letter and has the characteristic of the letter annexed to its lower end below the line, the loop taking up a part of the length of the hair line, so that it does not terminate so far below the line as in the case of the other letters. These two letters J and Q are therefore not entirely exceptions to the rule as to the presence of the hair line flourish,
but it is so far modified in them as to make them exceptional.
Special peculiarities of the different letters, consistent with the general characteristics of the entire font, and tending to give the whole font, especially as to capitals, agraceful ornamental appearance, may be noted:-A small loop, not necessarily pertaining to the conventional outline of the letter, is incorporated in the upper element or part of many letters, usually following the hair line flourish. Instances of this are seen in capitals C, D, E, G, and S. Quite similar to this feature, being, in fact, the same feature modified only by the conventional outlines of the letters,is the feature found in letters whose conventional form contains such a loop, the hair line merging in the loop. Instances of this are capitals I, M, N, U, V, W, X, Y and Z. A further adaptation of the same characteristic to the conventional form of the letter when that form is the general oval is seen in capitals A and O. The general style of the lower case letters, figures and points harmonizes with the capitals, but without special individual characteristics in the difierent letters or characters.
I claim The design for a font of script type herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, Illinois, this 16th day of December, 1893.
JAMES WEST.
