Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD HALE SMITH AND \VILLIAM FRANK CLARK, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO THE R. II. SMITH MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESlGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 24,515, dated July 30, 1895.
Application filed April 2, 1895 Serial No. 544,212. Term of patent '7 years.
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, RICHARD HALE SMITH and WILLIAM FRANK CLARK, both citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Springfield, in the county of Ilampden and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented and produced a new and original Design for Font 0t Printing-Type, of which the followig is a full, clear, and exact description.
The design relates generally to the contiguration of the capitals and small letters and the figures, together with the character (Q5737 the dollar and cent sign, doc.
The especial object of our invention is to produce a series of upper and lower case letters, together with signs, marks, and figures, which, while being distinct and easily read' able, will present a unique, attractive, tasty, and harmonious appearance and be adapted for printing show-cards, and is designed to have the effect of slzillful shading-pen or brush work.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a parthereof, we have shown each letter from A to Z, inclusive, of the capitals, together with the character it, and also the dollar, cent, and interrogation mark or sign and dash, and also the lowercase letters from a to z, inelusive; also the figures from 1 to 9, inclusive,
and the figure O and the fraction 1} The leading feature of our design consists in the shape or configuration of the characters which in ascript Italic style somewhatimitate effects which might be produced by a shadingpen or brush.
1 The most notable characteristics of the design are, first, the curved portions of the letters have their heaviest parts located in the upper right-hand and lower left-hand portions, which feature may also be expressed by 40 saying that the centers of the heavy shades of the curves fall opposite to each other upon a line inclined to the horizontal instead of being horizontal, as is the case with printed characters in general. This is particularly 5 well illustrated in the letters 0, Q, o, s, and figure 9. A second feature is that the heavy portions are graded off into the lighter by easy curves.
In keeping with the general style the stems 5c of the capitals B, D, P, and R are detached at both top and bottom. This is in accordance with the main idea of the design-namely, that of letters and figures formed by a pen or brush drawn from a point not vertically 55 below the letters, but held somewhat to the right below the letters, as would be the case in writing with a stub-pen or forming the characters with a brush. The terminations also of the various lines forming the char- 6o actors have the general appearance of having been formed by a shading-pen or brush.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is The design for a font of printing-type, as 65 herein described and shown.
RICHARD IIALE SMITH. WILLIAM FRANK CLARK.
