HERMAN IIILENBURG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDERS COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEIV J DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRlNTlNG-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,548, dated August 17, 1897'.
Application filed June 23, 1897. Serial No. ($41,994:. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may cancer/t:
Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a cer- 5 tain new and useful Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.
My design for a font of printing-type is clearly illustrated in the accompanying typographical impression.
The essential feature of the design is the heavy-faced old English effect modernized.
In the upper case the letter A has a straight right-hand line and a curved left-hand line with straight upper and central cross-lines. The letter B has a heavy left-hand line and the terminal of the upper loop is on an incline and the lower loop is connected to the upper loop by a diagonal line. The upper serif of the letter passes diagonally through the lower portion of the letter. The letter D is in keeping with the letter B. The vertical line of the letterE is united to the upper and lower lines of the curve and the central tongue is straight. The vertical line of the letter F is ogee in form and the upper line of the said letter is also ogee in form, while the central tongue is straight. The letter G is in keeping with the letter O, with the exception that the lower end of the letter is connected to the inclined serif by a diagonal line. The lefthand vertical line and the upper line of the letter II is straight, the upper line extending the full width of the letter and the right-hand line is curved. The letter I has a serif only on the upper end. The letter J has an ogee curved upper line and the vertical line is united to the loop at the bottom and the curve. The left-hand line of the letter K is straight, while the upper inclined line is turned inward at the top and the lower inclined line is swelled at the center. The upper serif of the letter L is turned inward at the center and is turned slightly downward, while the lower line of the letter gradually thickens as it nears the end. The left-hand line of the letter M is straight and the right-hand line is curved. The letter N is in keeping with the letter M. The letters 0 and Q are in keeping wit-h each other, with the exception that the letter Q has an ogee curved tail. The main portions of the letters P and R resemble each other and the upper loop of the letter P curves at the lower end, while the lower diagonal line of the letter R is enlarged at the centersimilar to the diagonal line of the letter K. The letter S has a curved central line and the upper and lower lines are arranged at an incline. The lines of the letter T are curved and gradually tapered. The right-hand line of the letters U, V, and IV are straight and the lefthand lines of the letters U and V are curved and are united to the straight lines, while the central and left-hand lines of the letter \V are curved and united one to the straight line and the other to the central line. One diagonal line of the letter X is straight and heavy. The other is curved. The letter Y is composed of two curved lines, with a heavy serif at the base. The inclined line of the letter Z is curved and heavy and the top and bottom lines are tapered and curved.
The lower-case letters and numerals are in keeping with the upper-case letters.
I claim The design for a font of printing-type as herein described and as shown in the accompanying typographical impression.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN IHLENBURG.
