Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.

My design fora font of italic printing-type is clearly illustrated in the accompanying IO typographical impression.v

The essential feature of the design is the heavy face With the peculiar ornamentations of some of the letters.

The right-hand line of the letter A is heavy I5 and vertical. The left-hand line is light and inclined and has a heavy base,with a flourish at the upper end of the letter extending to the left. The upper curved line of the letter B terminates beyond the inclined straight line. The lower portion ofthe letter C is heavy and terminates in a point, while the upper line terminates in a scroll. The letter D isin keeping With the letter B. The upper and lower lines of the letter E have heavy terminals which are curved, and the letter F is in keeping with the letter E.

The letter J has a peculiarly-formed lower terminal and a slight projection near the base of the heavy line. The upper inclined line of 0 the letter K terminates in a bulb, and the letter L is in keeping with the letter E; The heavy inclined lines of the letters M and N extend beyond the other lines, which they join. The tail of the letter Q extends below the line and is connected to a tapered curved 5 line.

The terminals of the letters S and T are in keeping with the letter E. The letter U has a right-hand projection, similar to the letter J, and the inclined lines of the letters V and 0 W extend in somewhat the same manner as the letter M. The letter Z has the same terminals as the letter E.

The balance of the letters are in keeping with the main design of the font, giving the appearance clearly indicated by the typographical impression.

The lower-case letters and numerals are in keeping with the upper-case letters.

I claimr The design for a font of printing-type as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanying typographical impression.
