0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANGUS MAODONALL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDERS COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEWV JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31 ,21 5, dated July 11, 1899.
Application filed June 15, 1899. Serial No. 720,728. Term of patent 7 years.
"1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANeUs MAODONALL, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented and produced a new and original De- 5 sign for a Font of Type, of which the following is a specification. I
My design is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
o The essential feature of the design consists of an alphabet of capital letters and an alphabet of small letters, together with a set of numerals, said letters having, generally speaking, an irregular outline, so that they appear ,to be drawn free-hand rather than by means of a ruler and instruments of precision. This characteristic will be especially noted in the capitals A, C, D, N, O, P, R, S, and U, in the small b, d, e, f, o, p, and q, and also in the :o numeral 0. The capital A has its shaded line on the left and the characteristic cross-bar somewhat below the middle of the letter. The capitals E, F, and H, on the contrary, have the characteristic horizontal mark noticeably :5 above the middle of the letter. The middle angle of the capitals M and W terminates at about the middle of the letter and is finished by a horizontal line, the uprights of the capital M being at an approaching angle to each ;0 other. The characteristic angular lines of the capital K each terminates in a cross-line at right angles thereto. The'characteristic loop of the capitals P and R is quite large, extending nearly to the bottom of the letter, and the g 5 lower portion of the capital'letter U is quite narrow in proportion to the top of the letter, the uprights of that letter beginning to curve toward each other almost from the top or serifs thereof. The characteristic horizon- 4o tal line of the capital Gr extends inward toward the center of the'letter and does not extend outward. The characteristic loop of the small a extends from the upper right-hand corner of the letter to its base, the rest of the ever, extending somewhat above the middle letter being formed by a heavy substantially right-angled line. The top of the small f extends slightly to the left of the vertical portion of the letter before making the characteristic crook to the right. The circular portion of the small g is considerably less in vertical diameter than the normal height of the letters'of the small alphabet, the characteris tic lower portion of said letter extending well below the line, as well as above it. The loops of the small p and q are substantially the normal size of the small alphabet, the character= istic verticals of those letters extending below the line. The small w has the characteristic of the capital XV, its middle angle, howof the letter, terminating, however, in a horizontal line. The lower extension of the small y turns to the left and terminates in a vertical line extending upward.
The numerals are all substantially the size of the capitals, the lower characteristic of the numeral 2' terminating in a line extending vertically upward, and the upper characteristics of. the numerals 3 and 5 each terminating in a line extending vertically downward. The numeral 4 is not closed at the top, its vertical portion being a little more than half the height of the numeral, and the numerals 6 and 9 being similar in character to each other, each terminating in a point. The shading of both the capitals and numerals is quite thick in proportion to the height of the letters, the same being also true of the small letters.
What I claim as my invention is- The design for a font of type as herein shown and described.
111 testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 31st day of May, 1899.
ANGUS MAODONALL.
