. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH GNICHWITZ, OF ASI'IBOURNE, ASSIGNOR TO THE MATHER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 22,870, dated November 7, 1893.
Application filed September 27, 1893. Serial No. 486,634- Term of patent 7 years.
To aZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH GNIGHWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashbourne, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a certain new, useful, and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose ot' this design is to simulate in printing types free-hand lettering, and thc leading feature of the design therefore, is the nervous irregularity of the lines constituting the characters in contradistinction to the mathematical or geometrical exactness usually predominant in and characteristic of printing type.
The accompanying drawing illustrating my design, shows an upper case alphabet, alower case alphabet, numerals, punctuation marks,
and the dollar` English pound (money) and and symbols.
In the upper case characters the free-hand simulation is markedly apparent in the Vertical and horizontal lines and in the terminals, While the whole of the lower case exhibits the characteristics of free-hand work in a most evident and striking manner.
My design is applicable to all the characters usually constituting a font of type.
What I claim is- The design for a font of printing type, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of September, A. D. 1893.
RUDOLPH GNICHWITZ.
