J l q-EH SR G. E. HBYER. FONT OF PRINTING TYPE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. HEYER, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT YF PRINTING-TYPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of, Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification, refer- `ence being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises large initial capitals, small capitals, lower-case letters, dollar1nark, and figures. In general character it is quite ornamental, especially the initial capitals. These initial capitals are designed and adapted to be employed only as initials, and are characterized by three features: First, each letter has either at the top or bottom a horizontal swell-shaded circumflex ourish-stroke extending at considerable length beyond the lateral compass of the remainder of the letter, so that it may overhang or underlie the remaining letters or Word with which the initial is associated, except iu the case of the letters B, D, I, J, S, X, Y, and Z, which have this flourish-stroke extending to the left; second, the initial capitals are characterized by a fine-line spiral terminal upon one stroke of most of the letters, the inner end of the spiral being slightly swell-shaded; third, the
initial capitals have a further characteristic,
consisting of a small diamond point placed contiguous to a vertical or within an oval stroke of the letter, the vertical position varying in the different letters.
The small capitals are characterized by a' horizontal circumflex swell-shaded line, which constitutes the characteristic stroke of letters A, E, F, and 1I, the lower terminal of the oval of B and D, the u per terminal of C and G, the lower terminaFof L and S. Another characteristic of the small capitalsis a slightly swell-shaded small hook terminating the upper oblique line of K, the initial vertical of M, both the vertical lines of N, thelower end of the oval of P and of the characteristic of Vin combination with them this cross-stroke overhangs the succeeding vowel. "A similar but smaller horizontal circumflcx fiourish is employed at the upper end of the vertical stroke of the letter d, extending to the left and overhanging the oval of that letter.
. -Many of the lower-case letters are marked by the spiral terminal similar to that of the initial capitals above described. Such spiral appears in the tail of g and j, in the upper curve of s, and the lower end ot the oval of q.
The design fora font cf type herein-shown and described, comprising initial capitals characterized by a horizontal swell-shaded circumiiex flourish-stroke as one terminal of each letter, extended considerably beyond the lateral compass of 4 theremainder of the letter, and by ne lines spiral as another terminal of many of the letters, and comprising small capitals characterized by horizontal circumiiex swell-shaded stroke as a terminal or characteristic of many of the letters, and compris ing lower-case letters, including the letter t, having its cross-stroke consisting of a horizontal circumflex heavily swell-shaded and extended to thc right a distance as great as the ordinary width of the letter, substantially as set forth.
Chicago, May 23, 1889.
