Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LAUSCIIKE AND JULIUS SCIIMOIIL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,346, dated October 8, 1889. Application filed September 14, 1889. Serial No. 323,963. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ERNST LAUSGHKE and JULIUS SCHMOHL, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and original Design for a Font of Print ing-Typo, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises initial capitals only. The letters are all considerably extended, and are characterizedby the entire absence of hairlines. Each letter has a horizontally-extended circumflex swell-shaded stroke either at the top or at the bottom. Such stroke is developed from one of the normal horizontal strokes of the letter when the letter has such a stroke in the proper position; but it is added as a flour ish stroke purely when the letter has no normal stroke in the proper position. The swell shade on this stroke is almost entirely confined to the'final arc of the circumflex, and is heaviest at the middle of that are, which renders it somewhat abrupt, although it terminates in a sharp point. In allinstanceswhen this stroke is appended to an up-and-down stroke of the letter at the lower end it makes an abrupt angle therewith. This is observed in letters A, B, D, H, K, M, R, and X. In all cases in which it is appended to such a stroke at the upper end it joins such stroke in an easy curve. This is seen in N, U, V, and W.
This design is further characterized by the form of the ccriphs of most of the letters, notably, A, G, (in the characteristic crossstroke,) H, I, J, K, L, M, N, I, R, '1, U, VAN, X, and Y. These ceriphs are quite deeply concave and terminate abruptly in squared ends. A similar characteristic, although not strictly a ceriph, appears as the finish of the upper end of the vertical stroke in the letters B, D, F, and R and the lower end of the letters I and L.
\Ve claim The design for a font of printing-type here in shown and described, comprising initial capitals characterized by horizontally -extended circumflex swell-shaded strokes, one to each letter, those which join up and down strokes of the letter at the bottom making abrupt angles with such up and down strokes, and further characterized by the deeply-concave ceriphs terminating in squared ends, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto set our hands, in the presence of two witnesses, at Chicago, on the 4th day of September, 1889.
ERNST LAUSCHKE. JULIUS SCHMOl-IL.
