VUN'YI' Ult' PRINTING TYPL. .(NU 17,758. Patontd 001,. 4, ,li-8V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BROS. t SPINDLEE,
DESIGN FOR A FONT SPECIFICATION forming parl: of Desi 0F SAME PLACE.
OF PRINTING-TYPE.
gn No. 17.75B, dated October 4, 1887.
Applcntiou l'lled August B, 1887. Serial No. Ngl'm. Terni ol' pntont T youre.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I` ERNST LAUSOHKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county ol` Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced anew and original Design for a Font of Printing- Type, which is set forth and fully described in the following specilicatiou, reference being had to the accompanying imprint, which coutains a. full and exact representation thereof.
This design comprises capitals, figures, dollar-merk, and punctuation-marks. The letters nre all formed of solid lines of uniform moderate width and entirel devoid of shade or hair lines, and ure Inni-ged by the following peculiarities, which distinguish the design:
First. A heavy dot is placed within the circular portions of some letters. ns B, C, D, U, P, Q, It, and S, and in the angles or openings of some others, es J, L` T, U, V, and Y. The e'ect ou the printed page will not be altered if these dots me transferred to some other letters. Too great frequency in the use of them produces a dazzling elect; hence I do not use them in all the letters.
Second. Gross-lines, as in A, G, and H, are oblique, and that of G does notcross the end of the b0dycurve, as in the strict form of that letter it should do, but only extends inward from it, and is of unusual length.
Third. M and W are unfinished "-thut is, the acute angle made by the middle lines does not reach the level ofthe ends of the side lines, and in both these letters the lefthand middle line is produced beyond the acute angle, and a similarly-appearing feature is presented in K, of which the lower oblique line crosses the upper oblique line.
Fourth. In B, P, and Rthesemicircularbows terminate without reaching the vertical stem, and in B the two bows do not touch. Both these features contribute to make the letters have an open appearance. V
Fifth. Open curves, except wheres. ceriph is usual, terminate in a slight expansion of the line, which then ends abruptly, and in some cases is concaved across the end. This fentu re is seen in the terminals of the bows of B, both terminals of C, the upper terminal of G, the lower terminal of J. terminals ol' the bows of P and R, both terminals of S, terminals of the curves of tigures 2, 3, 5, upper terminal of 6, lower terminal of 9, upper terminal of the interrogation-poiut, und both terminnls of the dollar-character, Si.
Sixth, All ceriphs, except ou vertical lines, areobliquetothelinesou which theyare placed, as in E, F, G, K, M, W, and character dt.
Seventh. Horizontal lines which usually have e. drooping terminal, as the top stroke of F, have such terminal oblique and tapering almost to a. point and then swelled to n drop, which terminates it. (Seen in E, F, T, nud Z und figures 2, 5, und 7.)
Eighth. Full-leugth curves, asof C, G, O, Q, and S, are swelled slightlyjust above the middle, and the swell terminates abruptly nt the middle point, forming nspur on the inner side. A similar feature is shown iu U on its vertical side lines.
I claim- The design for a font of printing-type herein shown and described, of medium weight, considerably expanded, and oi uniform-width lines, the letters B, P, and R having their bows of open curves stopping abruptly short of the stem at its middle and joined to the stem et its upper end, all open curves, including said bows, being daring or expanded at the ends and terminating abruptly without dourish by squarebut orsllghtly-conceve ends, the letters A, H, and G having their crossstrokes oblique, und the letters M and W having their oblique lines shorter than their side lines and one of the oblique lin extended beyond the other, substantially as set forth.
ERNST LAUSCHKE.
