UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. HEYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN. FOR A FONT 0F PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,205, dated October 14, 1.890. Ap lication filed September 15, 1890- Serial No. 365,101- Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises capitals, figures, dollar-mark, character &, and points. In general the letters are quite extended, involving much open space, comprising lines very nearly uniform in Weight, the lighter linesbeing quite heavy and the heaviest lines being but little heavier. The junctions of horizontal and vertical lines are made without either extending beyond the other, exceptin the case of crossed letters, as T, giving a general appearance resembling gothic. Exterior junction angles and terminals are finished with slight ceriphs. Capitals C and Ghave theirlower right-hand curve half the height of the letter and consisting of swell shade or crescent, which in the case of capital C terminates in a fine point and in the case of capital G has the characteristic of that letter appended at the end of the crescent, set obliquely, and making a junction with the crescent and not crossing it, said crescent terminating abruptly in a square end. The lower horizontal strokes of capitals E and L exhibit a peculiarity consisting of a swell at the left-hand end, whose upper boundary is slightly circumflex, such swell ending at the left in the upright stem of the letter just after reaching its greatest fullness and commencing to diminish, the other end of the horizontal stroke terminating in a spiral-like sweep or flourish above the line, which ends in a downwardly concave heavy crescent.
I claim- The design fora font of printing-type here in shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, at
Chicago, Illinois, this 28th day of August,
.GI-IAS. E. HEYER. Witnesses:
J EAN ELLIOTT, CELEsTE P. CHAPMAN.
