Description

No. 11,044 March L1, 1879 ABCDEFGHUKLMNGPQRSTU UNITED STATES CHARLES E. HEYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR M. BARN- HART, ALSON E. BARNHART, CHARLES E. SPINDLER, AND SIMON G.
STINE.
PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11,044, dated March 4, 1879; application filed January 25, 1879. [Term of patent 14 years] To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HEYER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have originated and designed a Font of Printing-Types, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying printed illustration, making a part of this specification.
In this design I employ moderately heavy top and bottom lines for each character and light lines for the vertical and interior parts thereof, no shadow nor purely ornamentalfeatures being used. The letter is an open one and plain throughout.
I-am aware that there are type which employ heavytop and bottom lines and light vertical and interior lines, and which are variously known among type-founders as French antique extended, French clarendon extended, and Egyptian extended, and my design may, perhaps, be classed with those styles, in so far as it possesses this peculiar-ity in common with those. But it' my design be compared with these old styles, which I may say resemble it more nearly than any others t0 which my acquaintance extends, it will be noticed that my letter constitutes a distinct character, because it is so much more open and is made with lines so mnch lighter. This latter peculiarity is especially noticeable in the top and bottom lines. Another peculiarity is the bevel-ended black cap and baseprovided for the apexes of the light-line angles in the A, V, and WV.
I claim- The design for a fontot'printing-types herein set forth.
C. E. HEYER. Witnesses:
ARTHUR M. BARNHART, EDW. S. EvARTs.
