Description

DESIGN.
A. ZEESB. Font of Printing Types.
DNO. 11,955. Patented Aug. 24,1880.
JUL/1mm UNITED STATES PATENT FFICEO ALEXANDER ZEESE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 11,955, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed July 20. 1880. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ZEESE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have originated and designed a Font of Initial Letters and Ornaments to be used therewith, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
My design consists of a font or alphabet of capital letters intended to be used as initial letters for the beginning of chapters and such like purposes, although they may be used for any species of decorative printing.
The font consists of a complete alphabet and a series of pendants, finials, and flourishes to be used in connection with the said alphabet.
In the accompanying drawings the entire alphabet is shown, and also the finials. pendants, and flourishes.
By reference to said drawings it will be seen that the letters are of mediaeval style, each one being inclosed in a square bordered by a hair-line, within which is a shade-line rule. The letter within the square is surrounded by a border-line conforming to the shape of the letter. Between this border line and the boundary of the square the space is filled with flourishes, lines, dots, curls, 850., so disposed as to give a gray tint to the paper. Within the interior of the letter there arein most instances one or more spiral lines, and in the interior of some of the letters there are chrysanthemum-shaped ornaments.
Figures 1 to 16 show a series of fragmentary ornaments, which may be united together and to the. initial letters in the manner shown in Figs. 17, 18, 19, and 20, so as to form a great variety of styles of ornamentation. The general eharacterof these line ornaments consists of curls, leaves. pendent lines, and ehrysanthemum-shaped centers. The lines and flourishes are made of such weight and closeness to each other as to give to the ornaments, as a whole, the same gray shade as is found in the interior of the square surrounding the letter.
Figs. 2i, 22, and 23 are center-pieces made by uniting in each case two similar pendants or flnials.
I claim- The alphabet or font of initial letters and their associate finials, flourishes, and pendants, substantially as herein shown and described.
A. ZEESE.
