A Q QFG IJ L QR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST lnU SLlIKE, ()li CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'lO liAl tNliAlt'l BROS. & SIINDLER, OF SAME PLACE,
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Design No. 18,970, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed January 26, 1889. Serial No. 297,726. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
to it known that I, ERNST LAUscHKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and original Design for a F ont of Printing-Type, set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design consists of upper and lowercase letters, figures, points, dollar-mark, character 65, and two ornaments. The general character of this design is medium heavy faced, somewhat extended, devoid of marked irregularities, and it consists in smoothly and gracefully tapered curves or finishing strokes. These characteristics are observable in the cross-stroke of capital A, the lower curve of capital B, upper terminal of capital G, lower terminal of capital J, characteristic stroke of capital K, oval capital P, characteristic of capital Q, oval and characteristic or tail of capital R, upper scroll of capital S and character &, final lower terminal of capital X, oval of lower-case a, b, c, d, g, p, and q, and final element of lower-case h, k, n1, n, v, w, and x. Other characteristics are the f0rmation of capital G without the characteristic cross-stroke, except a ceriph, the principal element or scroll terminating horizontally at the lower end, a direct vertical element or characteristic making junction with horizontal terminal on the line, and being there finished with an acute obliquely-extended ceriphlike point.
In respect to the smooth and graceful ta pering above pointed out as a characteristic of many of the letters, it should be noticed that in the great majority of instances such curves are convex forward, and that this is true in such instances as the tail of K and terminal of X, V, and NV, and lower-case m and n, wherein the standard form of the letter would permit curvature either forward or rearward.
The design fora fonto'i printing type herein shown and described, consisting of letters medium heavy-faced and moderately extended, characterized by flowing tapering terminal curves con vex forward of many of the letters, as capitals 15, D, K, and .X and lower-case b, h, m, n, p, v, w, and x, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, at Chicago, Illinois, this 12th day of January, 1889.
ERNS' LAUSCIIKE.
