Description

DESIGN.

FONT 0P PRINTING TYPE.-
No. 20,516. Patented Feb. 10,1891.
M JaOJ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J ULIUS SOIIMOHL AND ERNST LAUSOHKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design NO. 20,516, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed December 31, 1890. Serial No. 376,407. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may conccrm Be it known that we, JULIUS SCHMOl-IL and ERNST LAUSCHKE, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook,
5 and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printi11g'lype, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises upper and lower case letters, points, figures, character ds, and dollar-mark. It is in general style much condensed, especially the lower-case letters. A
I distinguishing characteristic is the erratic shading of the lowercase letters-that is to say, the absence of uniformity of method in applying shades. Thus lower-case h, k, l, m, n, and u are without shades. Lower-case i,
j, l, r, and t may also be. added to this list; but as these letters consist of but a single stroke the absence of shades is not marked. Lower-case b, d, p, and (1 have their corresponding oval elements lightened at the middle with the shades at the upper and lower ends, while the oval elements of lower-case g and 0 have swell shades merging in fine lines toward both ends substantially alike, while the oval elements of lower-case a, c, and e 0 have the swell shades tapering gradually to fine lines at the top and abruptly at points at the bottom-that is, the shade is what might be termed a drooping shade, the weight being accumulated toward the lower end. Lower-case V, w, x, y, and 2 have their lines alternately heavy and light. There are thus presented in the lower-case letters four different modes of applying shades, the second of which, presented in letters b, d, p, and q, is quite peculiar and strongly in contrast with the mode of shading presented in letters 9: and o. In like manner the mode of shading, or rather the absence of shades, in letters 11, i, j, k, l, m, and t is in marked contrast with the alternately light and heavy lines of letters v, w, X, y, and Z.
We claim The design for a font of type herein shown and described, wherein the lower-case letters are much condensed and erratically shaded, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands, at Chicago, Illinois, this 18th day of December, 1890.
JUL. SOIIMOHL. ERNST LAUSOHKE.
