MJ-IMM.. @WW
`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LAUSCHKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROS. da SPINDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,271, dated April 24.1888.
Application filed January 1l, 1888, Serial No. 260,455. Term of patent 14 years.
Towa whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ERNST LAUsoHKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing Type, of which the following is a specitlcation, reference being had to the accompanying typographie impressions, which are exact representations of said design.
The character of this design is a very light somewhat extended type without ornamentation, and comprises capitals, small letters, characters, and points.
The peculiarities of this design are that the stems and cross-lines of the capitals are gen-v erally very long tapers, cnt squarely off at the larger ends; that where it is possible one line at least of each capital extends below the baseline; that in capitals having a straight main stem and also a circular swelled portion the latter ends not in contact with the stem, but in a small curve atashort distance therefrom, as in B, D, P, and R. Capitals having toplines,
as B, D, F, N, P, R, T, and Z, have top lines in the form of circumfiex curves. The small .small letters, characters, and points, having capitals whose stems and cross-lines are long tine tapers, one of whose lines generally extends below the base line and whose top lines are circnmex curves, and having small let` ters without ceriphs or oramentation, considerably extended, and whose lines are [ine and of uniform width.
ERNST LAUSCHKE.
