Description
UNITED STATES l We PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM \V. JACKSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BARNHART BROS. 8t SPINDLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,797, dated October 18, 1887.
Application filed August 24, 1887. Serial No. 247,771. Term of patent 7 years,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM W. JACKSON, acitizen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced the certain new and original Design for aFont of Type which is set forth and fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying prints, containing exact representation thereof.
The features which distinguish this design, and which give to a page of matter printed from a font of type embodying it a novel and peculiar appearance, are mainly two, viz:
First. The continuation of the hair line which finishes the flourish-scroll at the foot of the capital-stem of certain capitals below the line and back to theleft under the scroll. This is exemplified in capitals M, N, S, X, and Z.
Second. The prolongation of the terminal hair-line of the oval scrolls of other letters up and back across such oval scrolls. Ihis is exemplified in capitals O, D, E, and 0.
Third. The abrupt reversal-of direction of the terminal hair-line of the flourish-scroll of capital-stems, forming an acute angle, and the continuation of such hair-line from the acute angle or carat thus formed asthe initial curve of a cap-stroke of the letter, as in B, F, I, P, R, and T, orof the cross-stroke, as in Aand H.
A feature closely analogous to that first above named, but pertaining to upper instead of lower flourishes or scrolls, is seen in O, D, E, U, V, W, and Y.
The capital Q has the tail formed in a novel manner by throwing around the terminal hairline of the oval flourish which constitutes the body until it crosses the body and reversing the stroke sharply in a shaded circumflex which crosses the hairline.
The lowercase letters and figures exhibit no marked peculiarity; but the novel appearance of the printed page is due to the capitals.
I elaim- The design for a font of type herein shown and described, which consists of a script having the terminal hair-line of the oval flourishscrolls of the capitals M, N, S, X, and Z prolonged below said scrolls, those of the capitals O, D, E, and 0 produced up and back across said scrolls, and those of the capitals A, B, F, H, I, P, Q, R, and G reversed abruptly to form the commencement of a cap or cross stroke, substantially asset forth.
\VM. W. JACKSON.
