DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.

Be it known that I, DAVID WOLFE BRUCE, of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern foraFontof Printing Types, of which tbe following is a specifica tion:

The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made; and consists of lower-case and capital letters, points, and iigures in the style 'of character known as Old has on the right side and below a very light shade-line, uniform in weight or thickness throughout, following the general course of the portion of the character along which' it extends, its arrangement being intended to convey the impression of its equidistance from the body-lines throughout its entire length.

Extending from this shade-line downward and toward the righty at an angle, say, of forty-tive degrees, are short lines of equal weight or thickness with the before-mentioned shade-line, intended to have apparent equal length, and to connect with the first-mentioned shade-line at equal, distances apart. These lines form what may, for the want of a better terrn, be called a diagonal ray-shade.7

The whole design diiers from each and every one of its class, either because of the greater or less weight proportionately of its body-lines, being heavier than some and lighter than others; because of being proportionately much narrower or more condensed; because ofthe increased distance between the lines formingthe diagonal ray-shade because the lines forming this ray-shade extend at an angle from the perpendicular line instead of. being in or parallel to or with such line; because of the absence of all ornamentation resembling tendrils or vines from the capitals;

because of the addition of the peculiar-hooked termination to the top ofthe heavy body-line of the capital A, and the pear-like ornament at the tops of the capitals C., E, and others, and the bottoms of the capitals H M N and the lower-case h, and the pear-shaped tongue to the capitals E and F; or, lastly, because this design differs more widely from the old black letter than any other of its class.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
