All Drawings UNITED STATES PATENT Q FIon DAVID W. BRUCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,186, dated April 4, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876. [Term of Patent 14 years.]
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID WOLFE BRUCE, of the city and county of New York and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design for a Font of Printing- Types, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographicinipression, to which reference is made, and consists of capitals, points, and figures of what is commonly known as a Gothic form-that is, acharacter formed of a line of uniform thickness or width, without ceriphs or cross-lines at the top or bottom. The character or letter is condensed in width, and has a shade-line of uni form weight on the right side and bottom, so situated as to produce the appearance of a thick block letter viewed at an angle of, say,
forty-five (45) degrees from the right and below.
The shaded part of the letter is colored by lines running from the body-mark toward the outer shade-line at distances from each other, decreasing from the top to the bottom of the letter, giving it the appearance of being exposed to light shining upon the upper and right-hand side, gradually deepening into a marked shadow below.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design or pattern for a font of printingtypes, as shown and described.
DAVID WOLFE BRUCE.
