Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WVOLFE BRUCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR FONT OF ORNAMENTAL PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,290, dated November 6, 1877; application filed October 22, 1877. [Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WOLFE BRUCE,
of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for-a Font of Orna mental Printing-Types, of which the following isa specification:
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, which serves as a drawing; and consists of capitals, points, and figures, resembling in general character the style ordinarily called Runic.
The body-lines are heavy or wide, and skeletoned or open-formed by a light or hair line on the left-hand and upper portions, and a very heavy black line on the right side and bottom, the latter being a shade-line, giving the letter orcharacter the effect of being what is called a block letter, with spaces cut through its bodylines, or simply inclosed by the lines forming the body-lines.
At the terminations of the body-lines, where, in ordinary Roman character, the ceriphs are placed, at the angles, and certain other portionsof some of the letters or characters, a small point is formed by a slight curved expansion of the lines forming the body-lines immediately before meeting or connecting.
In the opening of thebody-lines, or the space inclosed by the lines forming the body-lines, and at the right-hand side and bottom of each letter or character, is a supplementary shade, formed by parallel hair-lines of equal weight or thickness, and equal distance apart, but of unequal length, according to their position, extending horizontally, and, as it were,'describing a shadow projected from the letter or character by light falling upon it from the upper left-han (1 side.
The whole'design differs from each and every other in either one or more of the following mentioned particulars: first, because of the width or weight of its body-lines; second, because of the open space-inclosed by the lines forming its body-lines third, because of the location of the shade or shadow lines inside of said open space in the body-lines; fourth, because of the lighter or heavier weight, comparatively, of the black shade-line, and the curving of the angles, as described above; fifth, because of the combination of all the above in one style, which has not, to my knowledge, been done before.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design or pattern for a font of ornamental printing types, as shown and described.
