LOGOTYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,243, dated June 5, 1900. Application filed March 15, 1899. erial No. 709,159. illo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANOISURQUHART DOW NING, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, and CHARLES ADIEL LEWIS TOTTEN, of Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Types, Linotypes, and logotypes; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a front View of a logotype embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 8, a side view thereof; Fig. 4, a View in front elevation of two logotypes embodying our invention as they appear when setup and justified in a linelike ordinary types for printmg.
Our invention relates to an improvement in fonts for com posing and printing in numerical languages-such as Greek, Latin, and Hebrew-the object being to produce a logotype alphabet adjusted to two or more symbols type by type throughout and adapted to be produced in the usual way employed in typefoundries for the production of ordinary type and to be put into composition either by hand orby machines, as circumstances may dictate.
WVith these ends in view our invention consists in a logotype having a body and a number and one or more alphabetical characters or symbols arranged one above the other upon the said body, with their faces in the same plane for simultaneous printing, and each forming when set up a part of a different transverse line of type.
In carrying out our invention as herein shown we employ, in conjunction with the usual alphabetical key-letter, two other correlated characters arranged both above it or both below it, or one above and one below it, whereby its phonetic weight or sound, its corresponding letter or other equivalent in another language, and particularly its numerical value in universal arithmography or numberwriting, are revealed to the reader simultaneously with the ordinary text, which results from employing the usual alphabet by itself. The said symbols or characters and number have their faces located in the same plane for simultaneous printing, each of the said members when set up forming a part of a different transverse line of type.
For the purposes of illustration we have shown an upper-case logotype from a Greek logotype-font, wherein every letter is numerical and likewise has an equivalent English or phonetic value. This logotype will be seen to comprise a body, the English letter H, which is the key-letter, the Greek letter E, (Eta,) and the Arabic numeral.8, representing the numerical values of the correlated letters H and E. The faces of the said letter H, the Greek letter E, and the Arabic numeral 8 arelocated in the same plane for simultaneous printing, so that each member of the logotype when set up will form a part of a different transverse line of type. It will be obvious that printing from these logotypic alphabets will appear to be made up of three separate lines of successive compositions in English letters, Greek letters, and Arabic figures; It will also be clear that since each type-body possesses its three separate members the employment of our logotypes effects the desired result mechanically and without the factor of error which must always exist in other methods of composition (as by several transverse lines subsequently adj usted to each other) due to the personal equation of the compositor. It thereforefollows that the employment of logotypes embodying our invention simplifies the compositors and proof-readers labors and eliminates the risk of error, whether the work of composition is done by hand or machine, for by virtue of our invention'we do away with three separate lines of type, two separate justifications, and generally two proof-readings. In fact, in most cases we accomplish the adjusted and perfected dual, triple, or multiple line by one operation of composition and of one proofreading.
The principle above described is also applicable to the production of our improved logotypic fonts in any numerical language, as Hebrew, Latin, &c., which does not require 5 illustration.
Having described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A logotype having a body and a number 10 and one or more alphabetical characters or symbols arranged one above the other upon the said body with their faces in the same plane for simultaneous printing, and each I forming, when set up, a part of a diiferent transverse line of type.
