DESIGN FOR A FONT OF ORNAMENTAL PRINTING-TYPES.

Specification forming part of Design No. 10,977, dated January 7, 1879; application filed December 2, 1878.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. J AOKSON, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for a Font of Ornamental Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, which serves as drawing, and to which reference is made; and consists of capital letters, points or punctuation marks, figures or numeral characters, and symbolical characters for dollars and pounds, the distinguishing fea tures of which are the peculiar figures composing the design, their novel arrangement in describing or composing the form of each and all of the letters or characters, and the caricatured resemblance to Chinese letters or characters borne by the complete design, while preserving the forms necessary to the perfect ease by which each and every one of the letters or characters should be identified as those in use in our own language.

The bodymark of the figure or numeral character 1, consisting of a mark light at the top and gradually increasing in weight to the bottom, then again decreasing in weight like the point of some cimeters, is the base of the whole font, and every character contains that mark-sometimes on a smaller scale, sometimes, as in the capital letter 0, being cut in two and joined angularly. These marks are combined in variousways to resemble our ordinary characters. The bowls of the capital letters B, D, P, R, and U, and also of the figures or numeral characters 6 and 9, are crescentshaped.

Besides using this mark or modifications of it to form the letter or character proper, I use the mark and its modificationson a smaller scale, and in combination with a fine line or lines on the inside or outside of the letter or character, as in the capital letter A, and sometimes across the letter or character, as in the capital letter T, asornaments to fill up the character and produce an efi'ect like Chinese printing.

The whole design differs from each and every other in the shape of its lines and the manner of their combination in the formation of the letters or characters, as described, and shown in the drawing.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The design or pattern for a font of ornamental printingtypes, as shown and described.
