Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS HERRIET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO DAVID WOLFE BRUCE, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR FONT OF ORNAMEINTAL PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part 0f DesignlNo. 10,292, dated November 6, 1877 application tiled October 18, 1877. [Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs HEREiET, of the city, county, and State of New York, have originated and designed a new Design or Pattern for a Font of Ornamental Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification:
rIhe nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying; typographie impression, which serves as a drawing, and to which reference is made and consists of capitals, points, and igures, whose lines resemble ribbons bent, curved, or curled in such manner as to describe their general shape and contour.
In some of the letters or characters the ribbon forming the body-line appears as though double in width, and partially folded or creased through its longitudinal center, split or divided above and below, the divided portions either being out off after a brief curve to the right or left, or both, or prolonged into some other portion of the letter or character.
The connections between different portions of a letter or .character are made in various ways-as, by depicting several independent igures or ribbons leaning against, supporting, or being supported one by another at their extremities, (see A, M, N, V, W in the drawing 5) by the flowing or curling over of one or more portions of the split or divided ribbon, as mentioned above, and shown by the letters,
drawing; by the intertwining of one portion between or around others, (cross-line of A and tail of Q in the drawing 5) by the passing of one portion directlyv through another, as in the tongues of the E and F, the crossline of the H, and in the crotch of K, W, X, &, and c the figures 2 and 4.
rlhe shade, although somewhat capriciously disposed, to secure plainness of design, is in general a deep black on the lower or underneath portions of the letter or character, rising to a plain white at the top or upper portions by parallel lines of decreasing weight and increasing distance apart.
The design differs from each and every other, either'because of its lines being-representations of ribbons, because of heavy shade below, and the light shade or absence of shade above; because of the apparent partial foldn
