DESIGN FOR. A FONT 0F ORNAMENTAL PRINTING-TYPES.

Specification forming part of Design No. 9,604, dated October 31, 1876; application filed October 2, 1876. [Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:

' a new Design or Pattern for a Font of Ornamental- Printingflypes, of which the following is a specification: y

The nature of my invention is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made, and consists of lower case, capitals, points, and figures.

All the characters are italicthat is, leaning toward the right-and are composed as follows: The body-marks, which are ordinarily heavy, in the present design are reduced into hair-lines, slightly heavier than what are commonly so called. The upper and lower portions of the characters, which in general are hair-lines or lines-of light weight, are in this design very heavy, tapering gradually into the light body marks. The ceriphs, which are also heavy and triangular in shape, taper in the same manner into the body-marks.

In a few cases they appear somewhat misshapen, the side which isan apparent right line being a continuation of the light bodymark, as at the top of the lower case b d h l, and others. In others the ceriph appears as though one of its angles had been removed or cut off on one side of, and close to the body-line.

In others the tapering portion is split or divided in such manner as to connect with two lines instead of a single one. In addition, the capitals are further ornamented by fantastically curved, curling, or twining hair-lines, of equal weight or thickness with the light bodylines, which are in some cases continuations of certain portions of the characters, or serving to determine the character of certain letters-as, for instance, thecross-lines oi' the capitals A and H. In other cases they have no positive connection with any portion of the characters, but are introduced to preserve uniformity in the design.

rlhe design dili'ers from all others, either because of the lighter or heavier weight of its lines; the taper from the heavier into the lighter lines; the curling or twining ornaments in the center-of the characters, and

their connection with certain parts of the' characters, or because of the absence of certain hairlines.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-

The design or pattern for a font ot' ornamental printing-types, as shown and described.
