UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. CAIITAIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MARDER, LIISE 8a CO., OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,508. dated August '7, 1888. Application lilcll June 15, 1888. Serial No` 277,267. Terni of patent I years.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. CAPITAIN, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Type, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying typographical impressions.
My invention relates to a new design for a font of printing-type consisting of heavy capital and lower-case letters, numerals, and points.
The leading feature of the said design consists in the letters having the thin and thick portions of their lines flowing together irregularly and unsteadily, all as hereinafter fully described, and as shown in the typographical impressions and claimed.
A consists of a heavy front inclined line, a comparatively light back inclined line, a middle straight heavy horizontal line joined to the inclined lines, a lower ornamental line connected with the front line near its base and slightly inclined downward and then enlarged and extended upward, connecting with the lower end of the back line and terminating with a downward curve, and a curved line connected with the upper portion of the back line and extended and curved backward and downward and enlarged at its termination.
The lower ends of the back vertical lines of B and R and the vertical stems of F and l terminate in backwardly-inclined points, and the letter Bis provided with a central line connected with the meeting-point of the front double curves of the letter, and this central line is extended backward across the vertical line and is slightly enlarged toward the end and terminates in an upward curve. The lower portion of this letter Bis ornamented with a line enlarged at its connection with the lower front curve and is extended upward and backward, nearly touching the point of the vertical line, and terminates with a downward and forward curve, being diminished at its curve and enlarged at its termination.
The upper front portion of C, F, and Sis enlarged at the end and gradually diminished backward, giving it the appearance ol' a snakes head and neck.
The back line of I) is heavy in its middle portion, is diminished gradually toward each end, and is slightly curved backward at the bottom and forward at the top. The top, front, and bottom portions of the letter consist of a curved line extended at the top slightly above and back of the point of the back line, and the lower portion of this curved line is abruptly curved upward, forming a downwardly-extended point, and the line is then extended backward, touching the lower point of the back line and terminating in a fine point in the rear of the back line of the letter.
The inner central portion of E, consisting of a line connected with the inner edge of the body of the letter, has its back portion curved slightly downward and its front portion curved slightly upward, and has its middle portion enlarged.
The middle portion of F consists of a line commencing in front of the stem with a heavy end inclined slightly downward, and the line is thence extended backward and obliquely downward across and terminating back ofthe stem, the entire letter having the appearance of a lower-case letter f made with a coarse The capital letterH is made in the shape of a lowercase h, the back line being enlarged slightly at the ends, which terminate in upwardly-inclined edges, the upper end extending slightly above the upper part of the front curved portion, which extends below the lower end of the back line and terminates with a forwardly-extended foot-shaped base.
The vertical stem of I is rounded at the top, and this stem and the stem of J are each provided with two straight lines connected with the stems and extended backward pbliquely upward and downward to a meetingpoint in the form of the lines of a triangle.
The top of I and of Z consists of a backwardly-extended line, heavy at the back end, and provided with a line point inclined obliquely downward, the front portion ofthe said lines terminating near the top of the stems in fine upward] r-curvcd points.
The top of .I consists of a slightly-curved line connected with the top of the stem and L0 un) IOO extended and enlarged backward and then dl minished abruptly to a fine point, and the lower portion of the stem of this letter is curved slightly forward and is provided with a backwardly-extended base-line inclined slightly downward.
The ends of the back vertical line of K terfop ward at the top and downward and forward at the bottom, and those ends are provided with short reverselycurved ornamental lines, the upper ornament nearly touching the upper end and the lower ornament connecting with the lower point of the back line.
The back lines ofthe capitals M, N, V, and IV and the lower-case v and w are curved backward and extended above the other portions of these letters, and the back, middle, and front portions of M are connected together ing enlarged toward their terminal ends.
The lower portion of P is curved backward and upward, and is slightly diminished at the curve and enlarged atits termination, andthe other portion of this letter is formed by the continuation of thestem curved forward, down ward, and backward, and it extends across and terminates back of the stem in a slightly downward curve.
slightly enlarged toward its termination.
The stem of T and back line of U are heavy in the middle portions and diminished and curved forward toward the upper and lower ends. of T is heavy in its middle portion, which nearly touches the upper end of the stem, and diminishes toward both ends, the back portion being curved downward and the front portion being curved upward, and both terminating in slight rounded enlargements.
A short slightly-curved line is connected with the upper portion of the back line of U, and is enlarged and extended backward. The upper portion of the front line of this letter is curved slightly forward.
fThe two lines of V v and the three main lines o W top and bottom, and all the parts of W are connected together at the top by straight oblique lines and at the bottom by the continuation of the curved lines.
The upper portion of the lower-case d is curved backward and upward, and the curved line, which is a continuation of the stem and forms the body of theletter, approaches nearly to but does not touch the stem.
The lower portion of f terminates in a downwardly-extended point, and the middle of this letter is provided with astraight oblique transverse line, downwardly inclined in front.
The top of g is provided with a straight horizontal line extended backward beyond the body of the letter, and the tail of the letter is curved forward, downward, back ward ,sligh tl y upward, and then downward and forward, terminating in a line point.
The lower portion of the front part of h is curved slightly backward, and is extended below the back line of the letter, and terminates in a short forwardly-extended base-line.
The lower portion of j is inclined slightly backward, and is slightly diminished at its termination.
The back portions of h, k, and p, the body ofi, l, m, n, and t, and the front line of q and the numeral 1 consist of vertical straightlines and all connected together.
The upper portion of the back line of y is inclined slightly backward, and its tail is formed by the continuation of this back line, which is inclined slightly backward and then curved forward and upward, terminating in a downward curve, and the front portion of the body of this letter consists of a loop formed by a line connected with the back line below its upper end, and extended thence obliquely upward on a straight line, and then bentabruptly downward and curved backward and connectback line at the backward inclination of the tail of the letter.
What I claim as new is The new design for a font of printing-type, the leading feature of the design consisting in the letters having the thin and thick portions of their lines flowing together irregularly and unsteadily, and the shape of the letters and other portions of the font being as herein described and as shown in the typographical impressions.
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
