UNITED STATES WILLIAM F. OAPITAIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 MARDER,
LUBE & (30., OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,629, dated August 16 1887. Application filed May 31. 1887. Serial No. 230,F93. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. CAPITAIN,
residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following 'is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying printed impressions.
My invention relates to a new design for a font of printing-type,consisting of vertical letters and numerals formed mostly of heavy lines, in which design most ofthe 1e ters and ceriphshave ornamental scrolls orshortcurves terminating in round dots, as set forth and claimed.
- The main portion of the back line of A is light, enlarged at the top and bottom, and the frontinclined line is heavy. The middle portion of A consists of two horizontal parallel lines, the upper line heavy and the lowerline ne, connecting the two side lines. The middle and central portion of A consists of a V-sh-aped light line extending up ward to the right and left across the side lines, gradually enlarged toward and having fine obliquelines at both' the ends, and curved slightly downward in front and terminating in a downwardly-curved scroll extended beyond the back line of the letter. The upper back and lower frontceriphs of A, the front portions ofE F L, the central portion of F, the front and back of the upper portion of T, the central and back portions of 3 and 5, the back of the upper portion of 7, the front upper portion of f and .r, and the lower back portion of small 5 all terminate with a very slight curve ending with a round dot. The upper front ceriph of A, the middle portions of F, the ceriphs of the upper and lower front portions of G, the front ceriphs of K, P, and R, the back portion of the upper frontceriphs of N, the front portion of the lowerv back ceriph of N, the back portion of the lower ceriph of T, the upper and lower frontceriphs of V and Y, the frbnt portion of the lower back'ceriph of W, thefront portion of the upper andlower ceriphs of W, the back portion of the upper front and the front portion of the lower back ceriph of X, the back of the upper and the front of the lower portion of Z, the upper back ceriph of d, all terminate with small short scrolls ending in round dots. The upper portion of B is angular and is connected by a fine oblique line with the lower front curved portion, having an ornamental scroll termimating in a round dot in front of the vertical stem. 0, D, and U are provided with ornamental central scrolled lines, eachllerminating in a round dot. The middle portion of F is inclined slightly forward. .Thelower portion of J consists of a scroll ending in a round dot; The upper curved portions of O1? Q and R' R each terminate with a scroll ending in a round dot in front of the back line of the letter. 0 and Q are open at the top, andO is provided with a central ornamental scrolled line terminating in a round dot and connected at the top with the scroll of the letter. The central portion of capital S has a fine line extended from the upper front portion obliquely across the body of the letter and terminating with a curve ending in a round dot. In the logotypes Ch Th the h is placed below the top portions of the capitals, and in Th a. fine line extends from the top of h obliquely across and beyond the stem of T and terminates with a scroll ending in a round dot. The logotype and is placed on an upwardly -inclined line, and a fine line extends parallel with the line of these letters from the top of the stem of d, terminating with a curve ending in a round dot over the space between a and n. The front line of n is extended below the bottom of the back line, and this downwardlyextended line is provided with a ceriph extending forward and backward and terminating at each end with a slight curve ending in a round dot. The numerals 3, 5, and 7 and the'letters g, h, j, p, q, s, and y are extended below the line. Theonter edges of the lines forming the upper portions of 8, cipher O, the upper portionsof g and small 0 are concaved. The thickest part of the curved portions of the lower-case letters b d g h k in o p q is slightly above the horizontal center of these letters, giving them a novel appearance. The lower-case c commences with a round dot,
from the front of which a line line is curved upward, backward, and downward, gradually increasing in thickness to the lower front portion of the letter, terminating with a downwardly-extended short ccriph. The upper front portion of lower-case e consists ofa heavy line, which curves upward and backward andgradually diminishes to a fine line, and then curves downward and forward and gradually increases to the lower end of the line, which terminates with an upwardly-extended ceriph line; and the upper front and lower back portions of this letter are connected by a fine oblique line. The upper portion of thelowercase g is provided with an ornamental line, starting fine within and near the top of the letter and extended upward across the top line of the letter, curved forward'and gradually increased to its termination. The lower portion of this letter, consisting of a curved line, is connected with the upper portion by an oblique line gradually increasing in size and terminating within th l er part of th upper portion of the letter. The bottom ceriphs of p and q are inclined reversely, as
shown. The upper portion of lower-case s begins with a round (lot. The back portion of lower-case v and the back and middle of w are formed by straight vertical lines, and the front portions of both of these letters consist each of a curved line increasing in thickness Thcback part of The design for a font of printing-type of vertical letters and numerals, in which most of the lines are heavy and most of the letters areornanieuted with curved or slightly curved lines terminating in round dots, and in which AEFGKL M N 1 RTVVVX YZ are provided with ceriph lines terminating in curves or scrolls and round dots, the upper portion of'B is angular, C and D are provided with central curves formed by fine lines springing from the inner edges of the curved portions of these lettcrsand O is ornamented with a central pendent curved line terminating in a round dot, these. and the other portions of the design being as herein described, and asshowu in the printed impressions of the type.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
