Description

DESIGN.
W. SHAW.
SPOON.
No. 21,657. Patented June 28, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM SHAW, OF BALLARD VALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 21,657, dated June 28, 1892. Application filed April 21, 1892. Serial No. 430,133. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W lLLIAM SHAW, of Ballard Vale, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Spoons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin'g drawing, forming part thereof.
The drawing represents the bowl and handie of a spoon, illustrating my new design.
The leading features of my new design for spoons consist in the symmetrical curving outlines forming gradual enlargements in the width of the handle. together with surface ornamentation by which the outlines of the handle are accentuated, which, starting at the point of juncture of the handle with the bowl, consist of two upwardly-extending headings the upper ends of which are overlapped by inwardly-turned foliations, transverse curved scorings on the neck of the handle, and horder-lines extending practically parallel to the outline of the handle, broken at intervals by inwardly-extending scrolled ends and slight :5 foliations, these border-lines being joined at the upper ends by ascrolled ornament and the division of the handle by inwardly-extendinscrolls into three panels, the lowermost of which is slightly convex to give a 0 cushion effect.
2 in the drawing designates the bowl of the web is shown as ornamented with a representation of a church.
3 is the handle, the outlines of which grad- 5 nally widen in graceful curves to 4 4, beyond which they are slightly contracted, then enlarged, and again contracted to 5 5, above which points they curve slightly outward, then extend upward in nearly straight lines for a short distance, and finally curve boldly o outward and inward to meet the projections 6 6, which are connected by a curved line over the top of the handle.
From the point of junction of the handle with the bowl the surface is ornamented by 5 the headings 77, the upper ends of which are covered by the inwardly-lapping foliations 8 8. Above these the outlines of the handle are accentuated by the lines 9 9, which, extending practically parallel to the outlines, form side borders, which are joined at the top of the handle by the scrolled lines 10, connecting the projections 6 6. These border lines are broken at intervals by the inwardly-turned scrolled ends 11 11 and are connected across the surface of the handle by the largerscrolls 12 12 and I3 13, which divide the handle of the spoon into three panels, the upper of which is ornamented with the monogram, the central panel having the cross 14 traced thereon, while the lower panel is somewhat convex, the neck of the handle being ornamented by slightly-curved transverse scorings 15.
What I claim is- The design for spoons,as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM SHAW. Witnesses:
JOSEPH A. MILLER, J r., M. F. BLIGH.
