DESIGN.
L. R. HORTON. HANDLE FOR SPOONS, &c.
No. 25,853. Patented Aug. 4, 1896.
INK INTER:
WITNIEEEEI UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
LOUIS R. HORTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. B. & S. M. KNOWLES COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,853, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed June 23, 1896. Serial No. 596,652. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS R. HORTON, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles of Spoons and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form.- ing part thereof.
Figure 1 is an obverse view of a spoon and its handle representing my new design, the tine portion of a fork being dotted in position. Fig. 2 represents a reverse view of the handle and spoon-bowl, showing my design.
The particular features of my design for handles of spoons and similar articles consist of the design as hereinafter shown and described.
In the drawings, 3 represents the handle of a spoon, and 4. the bowl of the same. It may, however, represent the main portion of any similar article, one of which is indicated in the drawings.
The characteristics of the new design on the obverse are comprised between the points 5 5 to 6 6 at the lower end of the handle and between the points 7 7 and the upper end of the handle, these comprising richly ornamented portions balancing each other to a large degree and connected by a comparatively plain neck.
The outline of the handle, commencing at 5 5, curves abruptly inward, then outward and inward in short curves, growing longer about the points 6 6, above which they curve in easy lines, gradually increasing the width of the handle to 8 8, above this curving boldly outward and finally inward in short curves ever the upper end of the handle.
On the obverse, between the points 5 5 and 6 6, the surface ornamentation consists of, first, two inwardly-turned scrolls with a leaflike ornament 9 between them, next the two outwardly-turned scrolls 10 10, which accentuate the outline at this part, and the leaf-like ornaments 11 11, forming a calyx from which springs the convex central panel 12, bordered by the headings 13 13, which extend upward and are overlapped by the leaf-like ornaments 14 14 and 15 15, these latter comprising an essential feature of the design at this portion. The stems of the leaves 15 15 follow the bold curves of the outline and extend to meet the outwardly turned scrolls 16 16, which, together with the ends of the beadings 13 and the ornaments 17 and 18, form ornamentations above the end of the panel 12.
On the reverse the surface ornamentation comprises the beadings 19 19, following the general outline of the handle and finishing at their lower ends in the branching foliations 2O 20, spreading onto the surface of the article to which the handle is attached. At the upper portion of the handle the parts of the headings 19 19 are separated and the inner parts are overlapped by leaves 21 21 and 22 22, branching from the edge portions, the ornamentation above the panel 23 consisting of a group of slightly-foliated scrolls 24, embracing a shell-like ornament 25.
What I claim is 1. The design for handles of spoons and similar articles, as herein shown and described.
2. In the design for handles of spoons and similar articles the obverse, as herein shown and described.
3. In the design for handles of spoons and similar articles, the reverse as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LOUIS R. HORTON. WVitnesses:
