UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VILLIAM O. OODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GOR- HAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND,
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,859, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed March 24, 1902. Serial No. 99,815. Term of patent 7 years.
To (LZZ whom, it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. CODMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handle of a Spoon, Fork, or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure l is a view of the front or obverse side of a handle, showing my design; and Fig. 2 is a view of the rear or reverse side of the same.
The handle is shown attached to the bowl of a spoon, the tines of a fork being indicated in broken lines.
The leading feature of my design consists in the ornamentation of the conventional fiddleshaped handle with raised representations of the poppy-plant. On the obverse side of the handle two oppositely-disposed open poppyblossoms, with a central partly-open flower, ornament in relief the upper end of the blade of the handle. A poppy-leaf extends over the bold convex marginal bead on each side of the central panel. The marginal beads curve inward and support a raised pyramidical leaf at the junction of the blade with the stem of the handle. Bold raised beads extend from the pyramidical leaf toward and then along the margin of the stem of the handle, termi nating at the junction of the handle with the bowl of the spoon in poppy-leaf ornaments inclosing a poppy-bud. A poppy-leaf extends 5 about midway obliquely across the stem of the handle. On the reverse side the raised marginal beads are more clearly defined. From the point of junction of the blade with the stem of the handle extends upward a group of leaves with upward and downward extending poppy-bulbs. Steins and leaves extend over parts of the marginal raised surface, inclosing the central panel, and terminate in the representations of poppy-bulbs. At the junc- 5 tion of the stem of the handle with the convex portion of the bowl of the spoon open poppy flowers and leaves are shown in relief.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork or similar article, as herein shown and de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM C. OODMAN.
