DESIGN.
W. G. CODMAN. HANDLE FOR sroous, an.
No. 25,503. Patented May 19, 1896.
INS/ENTER:
WHTNESSEE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM C. CODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RIIODE ISLAND, ASSIGIOR TO Tllhl GORIIAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLAFE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,503, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed April 1, 1896. Serial No. 585,828. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WTLLIAM C. CODMAN, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles of Spoons, Forks, and Similar Articles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to lo the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a view of the reverse side, of the handle.
The leading feature of my design consists x5 in the curved outline of the handle, by which the neck, slightly contracting from its lower end, curves gradually outward to the upper end of the handle, where the outline suddenly turns inward, so as to form two rounded cor- 2o ners, and in the raised sn rface ornamentation.
In the drawings, a indicates the lower end of the handle where it joins the bowl of a spoon, fork, or other similar article; I), the neck of the handle, and c the plate of the handle. The lower part of the handle and the neck, from the point marked i in the drawings down, has on its margins the raised bead 5 on the obverse as well as the reverse sides of the handle. These two marginal 3o beads 5 5 curve Very gradually inward to the narrowest portion of the neck and as gradually curve outward toward the lower end of the handle, thereby giving to the handle an easy flowing outline without any break. The
5 lower end of the raised beads 5 5 curve suddenly inward to form the scrolls 6, from which the leaf ornaments 7 extend to the bowl of the spoon, the bodyof the fork,or other article. On the reverse the scalloped shell ornament extends over the article to which the handle is attached, while on the obverse the foliated ornament 9 fills up the space between the beads 5 5 above the scrolls (i. At the plate of the handle the raised beads 5 5 terminate in inwardly-curved foliations 10 on both the obverse and reverse sides. The upper rounded corners of the plate of the handle are ornamented with the raised scrolls 11 and the end ornamentation 12,0011 sisting of a three-arched niche. A palm-leaf-shaped ornament 13 extends from the scrolls 11 ll downward along the margin of the plate of the spoon to the point -l. The central portion of the obverse of the handle, between the marginal orna mentations common to both sides, is enriched by the inward-curved scrolls 14 and the sealloped shell ornament 15 and below the scrolls 14 by the pendent foliated cluster iii, from the center of which depends the floral ornament 1?.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The design for the handle of spoons, forks and similar articles herein shown and dcscribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
