Patented Sept. 6,'1892v.
@baffi/M75.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WILKINSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 21,839, dated September 6, 1892.
Application led August 9, 1892. Serial No. 442,618. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE WILKINSON, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design forHandles of Spoons and SimilarArticles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 represents an obverse view of a handle attached to the bowl of a spoon, illustrating the front of my new design. Fig. 2 represents a reverse View of the handle and the bowl of the spoon, illustrating the back.
The leading features of my new design consist in the contracted neck forming the lower portion of the handle, above which the outline of the handle is continued in irregular curves, forming substantially two enlargements connected bya contracted portion, surface ornamentation on the obverse surface, consisting of overlying foliage on the neck and branching outward over the edges of the first enlargement, partially surrounding a shell-like ornament, a foliated beading extending around the edges of the upper enlargement, connected by a scrolled shell at the upper end, and an elongated shell-like ornament extending Within a portion of the beadings, from which a foliation extends diagonally across the contraction between the enlargements, on the reverse surface a displayed shell-like ornament extending over a portion of the article to which the handle is attached, overlapping foliage on the neck of the handle and beadings on the edges thereof, a foliage branch extending around the edge of the lower enlargement and inwardly over the contracted portion, and elongated scrolls slightly foliated and encircled at intervals by shell-like ornamentations forming borders around the upper portion of the handle.
3 in the drawingsindicates the handle, illustrating my new design, and 4: the bowl of a spoon. The tine portion of a fork or any similar article may, however, be substituted for the bowl 4. The outline of the handle extends upward to 5 5 in almost parallel lines and then gradually widens in a succession of short inward and outward curves to 6 G. It is then contracted to 7 7, and finally curves gradually outward and then inward to meet the scrolled inial 8. The obverse surface of the handle below 5 5 is ornamented with overlapping foliage-leaves 9 9, the foliage at the upper end of the neck being extended around the edges of and partially over the surface of the first enlargement, ending at one side in the flowering branch 10 and on the other in the bead 12, partially surrounding the shell 11. The beading 13 extends from the branch 10 to form a border for one side of the contraction and the upper enlargement when it is enriched by an inwardly-extending foliated scroll 14: and the shell-like effect 15. The foliated beading 16 extends to form a border for the remaining side of the upper enlargement, and the upper end of the handle is ornamented by the shell-like finial 17. The reverse surface of the handle has at its lower end a shell-like ornament 18, which partially extends onto the body of the article to which the handle is attached. On the neck of the-handle are the overlapping foliage-leaves 19 19 and the beadings 20 and 21. The juncture of the neck with the first enlargement is ornamented with the shell 22 and the foliated scrolls 23 and 24, forming borders for this enlargement, the scroll 23 being extended diagonally inward over the surface in the shape of a branch 25. The beadings 26 and 27 form borders for the contracted portion, and the upper enlargements being enriched by slight foliations and rococo ornaments and joined at the top of the handle by the ornament 28.
What I claim is- The design for handles of spoons and similar articles, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE WILKINSON. Witnesses:
JOSEPH A. MILLER, .I r., M. F. BLIGH.
