UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES EDYVARD STRATER, OF PROVIDENCE, RIIODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE \VATSON & NEVELL COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF ATTLTC- BOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,238, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,425. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES EDWARD STRATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a newand original Design for the Handie of a Spoon, Fork, or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the obverse side of the handle, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse side of the same.
The leading features of my design consist in the raised ornamentation of the stem of the handle, by which the stem is divided into two distinct parts, and in the ornamentation of the blade of the handle, in which two oppositely-disposed marginal scrolls rest on and are surmounted by radially-fluted ornaments.
In the drawings, A designates the bowl of a spoon or other article to which the handle is attached, B the stem of the handle, and O the blade of the same. The lower part of the stem is ornamented with the raised marginal beads e, terminating at their outward curved ends in knobs. The central portion of this lower part of the stem B is ornamented with radial tapering bars, the ends of which extend upward above the outward curved ends of the marginal beads e. A space is left between the ends of the beads e and the lower ends of the raised beads f, which extend along the margin of the upper partof the stem of the handle and terminate in outwardlyeurving ends at the union of the stem B with the blade 0. The blade is ornamented by two oppositely-disposed scrolls g, curvinginward at the upper and outward at the lower ends, between which ends the radially-disposed tapering bars form crested ornaments. On the obverse side two rows of spherical beads h extend over the scrolls g on each side of the panel IT.
011 the reverse the ornamentation of the lower end of the handle extends radially over a portion of the article to which the handle is attached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork, or similarartiole, herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set in y hand.
