UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM O. OODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 26,921, dated April 20, 1897.
A li ti fil d March 10, 1897. fierial No. 626,891. Term of patent 7 years.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XYILLIAM O. CODMAN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles for Spoons, Forks, and Similar Articles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a front view of a handle connected with the bowl of a spoon, as shown in solid lines, or to the tines of a fork, as shown in broken lines, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse of the handle. These two views are deemed necessary to fully illustrate my design.
The leading features of my design consist in a foliated oval wreath having terminal ornaments on the opposite ends and the flow ing curved lines of the stem of the handle, having at intervals inwardly-curved foliations and terminating at the junction of the handle with the bowl of the spoon or the tines of a fork in inwardly-curved foliated scrolls.
In the drawings, a indicates the bowl of a spoon, the blade of the fork, or similar article to which the handle is connected; I), the lower end of the handle; 0, the stem, and d the upper enlarged portion of the handle. Near the upper end of the handle the oval space 0 is surrounded by the marginal raised beads 3 3, the ends of which are curved inward and form the scrolls 4 4. Between the two upper scrolls l 4 the foliated ornament 5 is placed, and between the lower scrolls l 4: the pendent ornament 6 extends down over the handle. The space between the marginal beads 3 3 and the oval space a is filled with inwardlycurving foliations, thus giving to the upper part of the handle, both on the obverse and reverse faces, the appearance of an oval shield inclosed in a wreath, the obverse side (shown in Fig. 1) being more ornate than the reverse side. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
On the obverse side, Fig. 1, the handle is narrowed below the oval of the upper end by a curved line and swells out at about the middle of the length of the handle, at 7, then gradually contracts and again widens, at 8, near its junction with the bowl or other article. The marginal head 0 has parallel to it the inner bead 10. From these beads groups of inwardly-curved foliations 11 12 13 are formed, so that the foliations of the marginal head 9 overlap the head 10. At the lower end of the obverse side of thehandle the marginal heads 9 terminate in foliated scrolls which cover the width of the handle.
On the reverse, Fig. 2, the heads 9 and 10 extend unbroken from the oval of the upper end to the enlargement 8 at the lower end, where the beads terminate into foliated scrolls, from which extend the floral figures 14. and 15 and the scrolled foliation 16. The foliated terminals of the marginal beads. 9 extend along the margin of the bowl or similar article.
The foliations, extending from the marginal 7o beads obliquely inward and upward from the lower end and terminating in the wreathed shield, present to the eye the appearance of natural plant-like growth, and this appearance is accentuated by the root-like forms of the design on the obverse side.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The design for the handles of spoons, forks and similar articles herein shown and described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
VILLIAM O. CODMAN.
