3 0 9 1 2 N A u D E T N E T A P W. C. GODMAN. HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLES.
APPLICATION FILED DEO ZB, 1902.
IN YEN TUE WIT-$235555- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. OODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GORI'IAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF PROVI- DENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 36,196, dated January 2'7, 1903.
Application filed December 26, 1902, Serial No. 136,755. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that 1, WILLIAM G. CODMAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new, original, and ornamental Design for the Handle of a Spoon, Fork, or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the obverse side of the handle, showing my design; and Fig. 2 is a view showing the reverse side of the same.
The handle is shown attached to the bowl of a spoon, the tines of a fork being indicated in broken lines.
The design is adapted to what is usually termed the fiddle-shape form of a handle, in which the stem extends from the article to which it is attached, contracting slightly until it approaches the blade of the handle, where it flares outward and into the blade. The blade enlarges into a bulbous shape and then contracts before it again enlarges to form a second bulbous shape, with a central protuberance forming the end of the handle.
The design consists in the conventional fiddle-shaped outline of the handle and the ornamentation, as shown in the drawings. On
the obverse side the marginal edges of the sides of the stem are ornamented with raised beads foliated at the end attached to the article. A fillet extends along the inner side of the marginal beads, and the marginal beads and fillets terminate on the blade with upwardly-turned scrolls and foliations. The marginal edges of the sides and end of the blade are ornamented with outwardly and inwardly turned scrolls and foliations, with the representation of a shell on the end of a raised panel extending continuously over the blade and stem of the handle. On the reverse side of the handle the marginal beads and fillets terminate at the end attached to the article in scrolls, foliations, and the representation of a shell and on the blade in downwardlyturned scrolls and foliations. The blade has marginal beads and fillets terminating in downwardly turned foliated scrolls supporting a shell at the end of a depressed panel extending continuously over the length of the handle.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ornamental design for the handle of a spoon, fork or similar article, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
